From Amazon, re: Okkervil River: The band's name comes from an obscure Russian story and the album title [Black Sheep Boy] comes from a song by fallen '60s folk hero Tim Hardin.

1. I will comply with your orders. It's military jargon. I'm just guessing this is where the band got it from though?

2. I'm guessing it's from basketball meaning tenacious defense?

3. Xiu Xiu. One of the most depressing movies I've ever seen.

Tenacious D is a term used in football for a tenacious defense
'
Fugazi is an Italian slang term for something that is 'fake'.
Fugazi were Japanese deserters during World War II.
Fugazi is the name of a rock music band from Washington, D.C.
FUGAZI was an American GI slang during the Vietnam war. "FUGAZI" is an acronym which stands for "Fucked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In." It refers to out-of-control situation such as in a chaotic jungle warfare combat environment.

cocteau twins has to do with Jean Cocteau

Rilo Kiley

none of the members have ever agreed to divulge the origin of this name. so, i guess it's a mystery for now. i'm holding out for the jenny lewis tell-all book, though. how fucking hot is that going to be...

Yes and no. "Cocteau Twins" was a very early Simple Minds song which the members of what would be The Cocteau Twins heard and named themselves after. Both bands are Scottish, no? I'm sure the song did indeed have something to do with Jean Cocteau.

I think Simple Minds later recorded the song with a different title.

More specifically, I remember hearing/reading something about Marv Albert's use of the term, but I might just be making that up.

What about - "Alright bands whom you've just discovered what their name means?"

The Decemberists - a Russian revolutionary movement of the 18th century that didn't do quite as well as their French and American counterparts.

Pretty sure "Walt Mink" is the name of someone's high school teacher. Probably someone in the band, but it was a long time ago when I read the info.

And I think the Tenacious D info here is right.

I thought it was Dicky V who once said "that's some tenacious D, baby" and spawned that name.

Wilco, as in "Roger, wilco" - military for yes, will comply.

The Yo La Tengo is a tribute to a Hispanic ballplayer (I can't remember who).
But he was an outfielder and called for the ball with "Yo la tengo!!!" – "I got it!"

Personally, I dig that name.

The story on Chacone goes like this. He played shortstop and had a habit of going back on short fly balls and smashing into outfielder Richie Ashburn despite Ashburn yelling out "I've got it."

A coach figures it's a language thing and tells Ashburn to yell out "Yo La Tengo" from now on to ward off Chacon.

Next game a fly ball is hit to Ashburn. Ashburn remembers what the coach told him and yells out "Yo La Tengo". BOOM! The left fielder smashes into Ashburn. :D
