I'll admit right from the get go that I know absolutely NOTHING about them. The only information I come armed with is that they look like a lot of fun and are totally cool. I'm not looking for speed, just cruisability and coolness factor.

As for style, I love the look of say the Indian Scout, Triumph Bonneville, or the (way too expensive) Harley Sportster. I would be looking used, as this would not be my only means of transportation. It's mainly just a "play around on nice days, weekend rides" kind of thing. I'm a cheap bastard, so I need no frills. I actually like the bare bones base models on the above mentioned. I don't have a budget established as of yet, because I have no clue what I'd need.

So, what info do I need to know. Pros versus cons. How much will insurance cost me? Where can I go to look? How do I even learn to ride the damn thing? Any info is much appreciated.

Ok, I still need the following:

Height
Budget (ballpark is fine)
Ever gonna carry a passanger?

In the meantime, look into the following...

- To learn how to ride, the local technical school usually has a ridership program in conjunction with your local DMV, who would be the people to ask about (in person is faster, but try their webstie just for shits, you may get lucky). Orrr, you can do what I did, which is just get your hands on a beater bike, and go out riding till it makes sense, and then take the test. But I recommend route 1.
- To look at bikes, go to the dealerships in town and look for used bikes. There are sooo many good used bikes out there that I almost NEVER recommend a new bike as your learner bike... you're just gonna fuck something up on it and get mad at yourself.
- Lastly, take the saftey end of it very, very seriously. It IS a lot fun, you do get killer gas mileage, and once you get into it, it'll be all you think about for months. But you have to be super-damn-serious on a bike all the time, because it's much easier to fuck up than when in a car. People don't see you, etc etc.

So make with the info!

Budget: It's still a dream at this stage, but I'm guessing less than $2000. (Is that even possible?)
Passenger: More than likely no, but would be nice to have the option maybe?
Let's just say no for now.

I'll look into the tech school thing. I also know the local Harley dealership has some type of training classes. Would this be a total rip or maybe worthwhile?

As far as the safety thing, I want in no way to harm myself. I'm kind of a pussy when it comes to stupid stunts, so no fooling around for me. And the whole reason I mentioned just having it for the occasional nice days and maybe little weekend rides...Houston drivers are fucking crazy.

You just sit and the weeds and wait to attack folks, don't you Smokey?

I'd buy a used, like late 80s Honda Rebel or something similiar and ride it into the ground were I so inclined

Like I said, go for option 1.

At 6 feet, the world is your oyster. At 5'4", I have to get something with a pretty low standover height, which limits me a good bit.

$2,000 is tight, but doable. Here's how its going to shake out as you visit dealers, surf ebay and cycletrader.com, and generally learn more about this...

1. The larger the engine, the more the bike costs. Who cares? Not you, at first, but you will later, and that's how it should be. A new Honda Rebel is maybe $3200 off the showroom floor, and it's a solid little bike. But it's a twin 250cc, and tops out at 80. That means it won't happily cruise above, say 57mph. That means you can't take the freeway ever, or any other road where people average above say 65, which is pretty common. Buuuut, you don't want a big or even mid-sized bike to start with, usually, because...
2. Every bike will seem huge to you at first. It's a wierd phenominon. The first time you stand next to, say, a Harley Sportster, it's going to seem pretty substantial. And then the first time you stand next to a 1500cc cruiser that's 2 feet wide, it'll seem like a monster to you. Which is good, because people need to be scared real good at first. But after a few thousand miles on something smaller, you'll stand next to a sportster and say "well that ain't so bad." And it ain't, but not until later. You have to work up to that.
3. It's very tempting to get too much bike to start with. Especially when you're 6 feet tall. Personally, I recommend the following models for you, and I'll explain why, but the gist of them is that they're on the smaller side of "medium," with enough power to hit 120mph, or cruise (more importantly) at 80+, which means you'll never *have to* trade up, even though you probably will want to. These are bikes that I am now working my way up to being able to handle...
- Honda Shadow VLX600. Cruiser, twin 600cc, low weight and height means it's easy to handle when you're stopped, easy to resell, not too pricey because it's "only" a 600 (which will still scare the shit out of you if you get throttle happy, trust me). They're over $5k new, but they're easy to find at 3 years old, with less than 2,000 miles for about $3k.
- Kawasaki Vulcan EN500. Ditto above. Slightly smaller engine, but with basically no difference in performance, and a little less money. The engine is from the Ninja 500, and is very reliable, forgiving, torquey, etc. Lots of these out there too, because people buy them as first bikes, then want something huge later.
- Suzuki Boulevard something or other. I don't remember why, but I never look at these. I think maybe there aren't as many out there used, but suzi, honda, and kawi's are what you should be looking for. They all make similar offerings and pretty much split the market amongst them.

Yes, Triumphs and lower-end Ducati's are waaaay more exciting, but they are nowhere NEAR as reliable, nor as cheap to maintain, nor as easy to find used, etc. It's your first one, so figure you'll have it for a few years until it feels like a tricycle, and then you'll know exactly what you want by then. In the meantime, those 2 I listed above will go anywhere you want, won't have mechanical issues, will resell for something respectable, and will definately make you very happy in the meantime.

***If you look at these and say "yuck," let me know. There are other styling options out there like a Honda Nighthawk 750.***

(god I'm sorry I keep rambling on this, but) here's a note about used bikes vs recently new bikes...

If you can in any way avoid it, do NOT buy any bike older than maybe 1997. Please. My current vehicle is a 1982 suzi gs300L. It's a little twin cruiser, and gets me around, but I have had a LOT of issues keeping it running, because it's old. Bikes do NOT age like cars. 15,000 miles is a lot of miles on a bike. I like the look of 70's suzi gs's or hondas more than almost anything new, but I want a bike that will start everytime and keep running without me begging. As it is, I have about 10 minutes of "startup ritual" right now before I can do something as mundane as go to the bank.

If you must, then you must, but at least try reeeally hard to get somthing newer (but not NEW).

Cap'n, sounds like you know your shit. You may have just become my new best friend.

I lean more towards the looks of the Honda Shadow of the ones you suggested. I like the more classic "cruiser" lines I guess (the Nighthawk is too modern, almost crotch rocket-y for my tastes). I'll keep looking and if you have any other ideas send 'em on!

That actually works out well in your favor that you like the cruiser style, because that's what's out there in bulk in the US right now, so you have lots to chose from, at good prices. Plus, it's the end of the summer (up here in WI anyway) so prices are coming down nicely.

In the 70's the big 3 jap bikes almost always came in 4 variations UNDER 750cc, (300, 400, 550, 650 etc), whereas now, most companies make maybe 1 or 2 models down there. It's our fault... the US drives that market to a large degree (and most companies make lots of cool bikes they don't ship here, and some dumb ones they do), and our $ has gone to big-displacement cruisers, with few exceptions. Our wives need bikes too, thank god, so they throw us a 250 / 500 bone every once in a while.

Another bike to consider, with acaution: The Suzuki LS650. LS stands for Large Single, which means it's got 1 large cylendar instead of 2 mid-size or 4 smalls. They're also called "thumpers," because with just one piston, it thumps like hell "whap whap whap whap" etc. A big difference in vibration, but the weight/power is good.

Here's one in Ohio on ebay, incorrectly listed as an "RS650," I think.
