What if they were conversing with someone sitting next to them?

i hate actually talking on the phone - i just wish my ipod could send text messages - if so I would just get rid of my cell phone. also if it had outlook and could wirelessly sync with my laptop - then i could really get down to one device.

Check out this software which syncs your Outlook to the iPod:

iPod Agent

i have a cell phone - don't use it all that much but it is useful for 2 purposes:

1. getting together/coordinating with friends when we go out drinking
2. getting in touch with wife to avoid "issues"

A cell phone is also nice to have when you drunk dial. Other than drunk dialing, I rarely use my phone other than to call my parents, #1 above, and occasionally talk to friends who live far away. I probably use 200 minutes on average a month - not counting free nights and weekends.

What's wrong with saying "I'll meet you tomorrow, 5 o'clock, at the Bon Accord bar" and then meeting that person the next day at 5 o'clock at the Bon Accord bar?
Good luck with that.

"Hey, I'm on my way."
"Don't, I'm not home."
"Where are you?"
"At Staples."
"Oh, okay, I'll stop at Borders, let me know when you're done."
"'kay. Bye."
"'kay-bye."

"Hey, Chicken Out stopped selling that chicken salad wrap you always get, what do you want instead?"
"Roast Beef."

"Hey, I've got a chance to buy a Mustang II for US$6K, should I?"
"Is it pimped out?"
"Yeah, purple, black hardtop, fuzzy seats, dice from the mirror, you name it..."
"No. There's probably something wrong with the engine. Wait 'til I get there to check it out."
etc.

If you cannot make it to the Bar Accord by some semblance of the agreed to time, bite the bullet, plug a quarter in the pay-phone, and call the host/hostess desk to say you'll be late. S/he can relay the message.

ROTFLMAO, you are obviously not familiar with the DC area, and it's "supposed" pay-phone system.

I still don't have one. I was thinking of breaking down and getting one of those pay as you go phones since my job is going to start requiring me to travel more in the next couple of months.

Any suggestions?

Go bang around Howard Forums and you can probably get more geographically specific information.

Where I live, Verizon is definitely the way to go. Cingular has absolutely no coverage on my peninsula, so I ditched them pretty quickly.

A friend of mine in Louisiana that travels all the damn time swore by AT&T, which is now Cingular. But read those forums and you can probably get some pretty useful information.

Thanks!
