I'm helping some buddies of mine start up an internet magazine, and my job will be writing music reviews.

My question: For those of you that have written music reviews in the past, how do you go about choosing what music to review? Generally, I think people want to read about things they are relatively familiar with, but I know that I'd rather write about things that people haven't heard/heard of.

What's your take, and keep in mind that I'm trying to connect with the most readers possible.

Write about what you like.

In order to connect with the most readers possible, keep your references to obscure artists pretty low. There's no harm in reviewing unknown bands, though, unless you can't find any good references.
