This one was more in-line with the whole Hop On Pop sound, but those half-finished songs I have are pretty much a departure - one is a minor key/modal-type thing and another is this sort of linear thing that zags when you expect it to zig. Then I have a song that Johnny Cash would have done well with, if he were still alive. And also a waltz that is really the only political-type thing I've ever written.
So, I guess, every song I ever write is really a departure in some way or other.
Before I wrote "Mile From Monday", I had never written anything like that before; ditto for "Bound To Fail", "Hey" (which is on Lo-Fi..., but will be re-recorded for the next HoP record in a very COOL way), etc., etc., etc....
If you listen to the songs, I don't think that I really do have a defined sound, per se. Although Matt's piano certainly colored a lot of the last record.
