Chinese buffet that comes to you. People walk by portions of your favorite delicacies (and chicken feet) and you pick out what you want. Your check is marked based on what you order, and you pay at the end. Different and sometimes fun way of going out to dinner.

Huh? I was sitting waiting for my food in a Chinese takeout when someone walked in & ordered dim sum. This doesn't jibe w/ your account.

maybe it's chicken feet then... or just small portions of things. My experience of it has been geared toward serving style vs. actual dishes. Maybe it's both depending on context.

Im sure Sketch is right - it's like a buffet but you have it at brunch time and it has lots of small portion type foods to choose.

I think it's food only prepared via steam; done in those bamboo containers that stack. And yes, at sit down dim sum restaurants there's usually a checklist menu and a server comes by with the various treats a la carte.

Steamed pork buns
Shiu Mai
Dumplings
Stuffed Eggplant

Quite yummy really.

Think of it as Chinese tapas.
Lotsa little dishes. Most of them are steamed dumpling-type dealies, but there is a pretty awesome variety of stuff, nonetheless.

Gary, next time you go into that restaurant, ask 'em for their dim sum menu to give you a better idea of what to expect.

I suppose I could do that with every music topic that's posted in here as well.

I also think dim sum is more of a meal you have during brunch.

Its a meal like tapas often had at brunch. I imagine its called dim sum because since you and your whole table's bunch are ordering anything that comes walking (chicken feet or no) by and drinking too, there's no way to know how much all of it is going to cost.

It's when you're adding things up on your calculator (the old one with the red LEDs), and the batteries are just about to completely cough up the ghost.

Dim Sum is killer. There are lots of great little dishes... yums.

BUT! Looks out for the chicken feet. *shudder* So wrong. So, so wrong. All bone and fat and if you're lucky they took off the claws... gah. so foul. fowl?
