I just visited Joe Pisapia's web site, and there is a definately kinda goofy tone to the site, that seems to belie a pretty goofy personality. It just seems at odds with the tone of the music on Daydreams (the only album I am familiar with). Unexpected.

Rumor has it that Robert Smith of The Cure is a pretty big goofball too, especially for a dour Goth.

Can you think of anyone else whose true personality seems to be at odds with their public/manufactured/cultivated persona?

And yeah, I know that it is all speculation, unless you actually know the person. I'm just talking about through interviews, etc.

Another example:
Chris Issac is a goofy motherfucker.

He is extremely goofy, bordering on Spinal Tap goofy. One of the reasons I like him so much. And you're right, it really does seem to defy the expectation that just listening to his music would give.

Alain Jourgensen. In interviews comes across as a slightly pathetic shrimpy dude playing angry-biker dress-up. But the dork creeps through the hair and leather and smoke/mirror hardness. Sonically amazing. Personally goofy.

Oh. Budgie & Siouxsie. On stage he's a primal creature, she can be downright disturbing.

In interviews they're pleasant, very British, tea-sipping sorts chatting away about the charming bit of fun they've had knocking out some tunes all these years.

Apparently Sarah McLachlan is very much not the airy-fairy ethereal type in person.

Not really a musician, but David Cross always seems very extroverted and confident on stage, but when he's interviewed or featured on a tv/radio show, he comes across as very shy and nervous.

Isn't he also a big soccer or football fan? That threw me off when I heard that. Goths and jocks aren't supposed to associate with each other.

He's British. Everyone's a big football fan. That doesn't count.

Except the ones who adamantly hate football and will slug you if you accuse them of being a big football fan.

I think I'll take my chances against some whiny English guy who doesn't like football.

There's no 'jocks' outside of America anyway, because there is no grid iron or la crosse outside of America.
