Design snobs. Dat cover ugly, but not "bad." It's a clean use of...well, two colors and a single mirror image. I would imagine it took minutes of hard work.

It's both ugly and bad. I should know, I'm a designer. There are spacing issues all over. Look how the band's name is evenly spaced from the left and top, but the album title is not evenly spaced from the bottom and right. I could also point out running the band name and the title up to the division between the two colors, but there's actually something intentional going on there, even if it doesn't work. The projectors aren't centered vertically either, and they really need to be. And look at the yellow block of color - it actually lays over top of the shadow of the "s" in Pornographers. I know what they were going for - the colors to bleed into each side via the text, but this is really badly handled. The first thing I thought when I saw this was that someone who didn't know design had put together their own cover because the real cover art hadn't been released yet.

what a bunch of art school bullshit.

I've got the degree - and it's a BA, not a BS.

Imagethat's where the jokes on you. a degree in art means shit nowadays. pfft, especially a BA.

That's nice Dalen, especially since i'm planning on majoring in art.

If art is someones passion don't tell them it's useless, even if it's what they have a degree in. You can definitely find something to apply it to. I'm looking into art therapy, I just don't know if I can bring myself to go to school those extra years for psychology.

i'm not talking about being a passionate artist. i'm referring to those people that graduate with a degree in art [not all mind you], and then become know-it-all designers/artists.

trust me, we've interviewed at least 30 over the past few years at my work, all with design degrees, and many were piss poor, but acted like they knew everything. others that never even went to school for design were much more creative.

yeah. i'm really terrified that by going to art school i'm doing the wrong thing.. maybe it'll drive me away from art, drain my passion, be my last years of creating work, i won't end up with a good career.
but anyways, i personally think it's great when people really know the subject theyre passionate about. like mot, for instance. he knows how to talk about the subject he's studied through college and can back up his thoughts with factual information.
it's not a bad thing to be a know it all, as long as you don't present yourself to be an elite artist asshole, but that goes for everything. that stands for music, science, literature, anything.
in my opinion mot didn't present himself this way at all, he was merely commenting on the ways the album cover were not aesthetically pleasing. i commend him on the knowledge he obtains.
i'd like to talk to artists that can present ideas like that on works of art at galleries or just during normal conversations. it makes for a more interesting conversation than one would be if someone just said "damnit that piece is really bad", if someone presented their reasons for why they thought it was.

i'm babbling, i hope you get what i'm saying.

I've never taken a single design class since Sculpture (blow-off!) in 10th grade, yet whoring it for advertisers pays my damn bills, bitches.

based on bullshit art school textbooks.

especially this comment "The projectors aren't centered vertically either, and they really need to be." that cracked me up.

thats just how he sees it, you don't have to agree.

i never hated the album art, though. i never even really looked at it enough to notice any of the problems, but i still didn't think it was anything special.

When did a degree in art ever mean anything? And, by the way, I was hired for my job specifically because of my art degree.

Dalen, what's your problem? I thought you were simply being playfully insulting, but it appears you're just actually being an ass. What's up with that? Did I offend you with an actual, qualified, explanatory reason as to why Twin Cinema's artwork is so bad? Wait - are you the "artist" behind this?

i just found your textbook reasons as to why it was bad, comedic.

So it would be preferrable if designers didn't actually know anything? Oh, that's right. Because the world needs more terrible design like Twin Cinema.

You don't go to school to learn to be creative. Anyone who thinks that is a moron. You go to school to expand the knowledge in your areas of interest. But there are just as many untrained bad artists out there as there are trained bad artists. Just like anyone who graduates with a degree in English can say, "hey, that's really bad grammar because . . . ," I can say, "hey, that's really bad design because . . . " I don't need the degree to do so, but in getting the degree I sure learned a lot about why bad design is bad design. And I explained why that was bad design.

I can't believe we can't discuss some truly awful artwork without it erupting into an argument, not because we disagree that it's awful artwork, but because I actually said why it was awful. Amazing.

I could say exactly the same thing about your responses to me. It's a perfect textbook example of the hipster-wannabe who wants to put down everything - you just roll out the cliche'd, dismissive insults.

Okay, I'm done here. This is just plain stupid. My wife and I are going to go take our baby over to see her grandparents to play for while. It will probably be a lot more mature than the direction this is headed.

I heard that "Love Revolution" song and thought it was hysterical. I honestly refuse to listen to the rest of the album because I am a HUGE Big Star fan and I don't want my idea of them to be ruined by the new one. I'd always like to think that they ended around '74 (which they did -- I can't believe they're even releasing the new one under the name Big Star)

If you're going to put yourself on your album cover at least make sure that you, you know, look remotely good.
