record stores:
These have been pretty well covered with the
L5P spots (Criminal Records & Wax'N'Facts which I frequent pretty often).
I'd also suggest
Full Moon Records. It's tiny, but they have some cool stuff, and it's in a cool little area which brings me to...
restaurants:
If you go over to Full Moon (it's a straight shot from L5P if you head down McClendon), you should try The Flying Biscuit, or if it's too busy, try Gato Bizco, the little place across the street. There's also a Felini's Pizza over there which is basically the same as L5P Pizza.
However, for pizza I'd recommend going to Grant Central East in East Atlanta or Camelli's on Ponce de Leon in the Kroger parking lot across the street from MJQ/Drunken Unicorn.
My favorite sushi place lately is
Zuma which is actually within walking distance from where I live. A lot of people prefer MF Sushi on Ponce, but personally I find it to be overpriced and the portions are painfully small, even for sushi (the sashimi is almost non-existant).
Right across Highland from Zuma is a little cafe called Roman Lily, and diagonal from that is the Highland Bakery, both of which are really good and might be considered for weekend brunch. Other good places for that (including Flying Biscuit and Gato Bizco mentioned earlier) are
Thumbs Up,
Ria's Bluebird (which is right next to a really good fried seafood place called Six Feet Under because it overlooks Oakland Cemetery), and
Radial. All of these places with the exception of Roman Lily get really crowded on weekends, but the wait at Radial is usually manageable and generally worth it.
I could go on and on, but I guess you didn't really ask for restaurant recs anyway
Whatever you do, don't get stuck eating and hanging out around where you're staying in downtown.
