Yeah! I don't think I'd discovered WGC yet when I did that first one but made up for that on the Twilight followup I did, although that one wasn't intended to be only alt-country, more like new Americana or something.

Great suggestions so far. I'm always a little confused about where alt.country ends, real country begins, and what they mean by roots rock. But here's a buncha cool songs to check out:

Jason and the Scorchers "Lost Highway"
Bobby Bare Jr. "Terrible Sunrise"
The Beat Farmers "Riverside" (or "Happy Boy" for larfs)
Belleville "The Crying Shame"
Carlene Carter "Cry Cry"
The Honeydogs "Losing Transmissions"
Walk The West "Too Much Of A Good Thing"
Freedy Johnston "Lucky One"
Oh Susanna "Mama"
Country Bob & the Blood Farmers "Honky Tonk Cunt"
Brinsley Schwartz "Country Girl"
Drive-by Truckers "Zip City"
The Gourds "Gin 'n' Juice"
The V-Roys "Wind Up"
Slobberbone "Placemat Blues"
Shelby Lynne "Why Can't You Be"
Greg Brown "Whatever It Was"
Kelly Willis "Take Me Down"
Hadacol "Drive All Night"
Mekons "Last Night On Earth"
Joe Henry "Ohio Air Show Plane Crash"
Bottle Rockets "Gravity Fails"
Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper "I Ain't Gonna Piss In No Jar"
Scott Miller & the Commonwealth "I Made A Mess Of This Town"
Jerry Jerry & the Sons Of Rhythm Orchestra "No Ass Tattoos (In Heaven)"
Jim White "Handcuffed To A Fence In MIssissippi"
Chuck Prophet "That's How Much I Need Your Love"
Green On Red "Time Ain't Nothing"
The Long Ryders "Lights Of Downtown"
Rank And File "The Conductor Wore Black"
Danny & Dusty "Baby, We All Gotta Go Down"
I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House "Westboro Baptist Church"
Cracker "It Ain't Gonna Suck Itself"
Steve Earle w/ the Supersuckers "Before They Make Me Run"

That Brinsley Schwarz song is an amazing song, from a pretty weak album.
