Nirvana's 1991 record Nevermind has been voted the most overrated album of all time by BBC 6 Music listeners.

Presenter Andrew Collins, a Nirvana fan, announced the results on Saturday, calling everyone who had voted for the Seattle grunge band's record "mad".

Coldplay's X&Y came second in the survey, followed by The Libertines' self-titled second album at three.

6 Music's Ric Blaxill said the poll had given the digital station's listeners the chance to "address the hyperbole".

"These results may upset Nirvana's legion of loyal fans," he added.

"But it goes without saying that one person's overrated album will be another's film favourite."

Albums by such established bands as Oasis, U2, Radiohead and the Beatles also feature in the Top 10.

Listeners were invited to submit their nominations, which were whittled down to a shortlist of 10 and put to a public vote.

"I'm surprised to see Coldplay's X&Y at number two," continued Me Blaxill, who attributed the band's high placing in the chart to "the influence of extensive media coverage".

"This poll has given our listeners the opportunity to tell us what they really think."

Andrew Collins (a former editor of Q magazine) is a likeable guy but his taste in music really stinks. It's so....mid 90's.

If by overrated he means changed the face of fucking music, then yeah, good list.

Yeah, because no one was doing that before Nirvana. The only thing Nirvana changed was to coral the unthinking masses into the 'loud guitars' section of the record shop for a few years until everything went back to normal again.

If Nirvana had any impact it was more to do with marketing 'alternative' music than anything else. .

What I meant by classic is Coldplay coming in at number two, as the only thing that would have been better is number one of course.

This is from a fan that loved their early stuff and about 75% of their second album. X&Y does absolutely nothing for me except wish that it would end. It’s way too long, unmemorable, and sounds the same throughout…

Yeah, because no one was doing that before Nirvana.

what the hell does that matter? Nirvana made more of an impact on music than those "doing it before them".

Downplay it all you want.

Yeah some are ridicules like OKC, Nevermind and The Queen Is Dead. Have never been able to get into the Sex Pistols or Beach Boys but realize their significance.

I'm of this opinion. I realize it's easiest to be cynical and say we're all just a bunch of lemmings, but the songs were pretty damn good and the impact they made was legitimate.

Nirvana's general formula may have not been so original, but no one that did it before them had the songwriting skills of Kurt Cobain.

Apart from NMTB, I can't argue with this list.

1. Nirvana - Nevermind - Deserves the hype, not overrated

2. Coldplay - X&Y - Hasn't been out nearly long enough to be considered overrated. In fact, I don't think Coldplay is overrated at all, just over-played.

3. The Libertines - The Libertines - Are you kidding me? I guess this is BBC so maybe in the UK but it's not overrated in the US at all.

4. Oasis - Definitely Maybe - Agree with this, I never liked Oasis.

5. U2 - The Joshua Tree - AMEN. Achtung is a much better album but everyone talks about Joshua Tree which is very dated if you ask me.

6. Radiohead - OK Computer - Not a chance, one of the greatest albums ever.

7. The Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - White Album is more overrated than this. I'd say among critics, Sgt Peppers doesn't get enough props.

8. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - Definitly. Good album but top 5 all time? No way.

9. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks - I'm not a fan but they were huge in bringing about the punk movement which has been a lasting genre so you can't really call this overrated.

10. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead - Don't know but I'm not a big Smiths fan.
