I get as much free stuff as I can, but I haven't really found any good free filesharing networks for Mac. I can never find whole albums on Limewire, and it kinda sucks anyway. None of the Mac ports of slsk I've tried have ever worked.

So I've paid for some downloads here and there. I got two separate free trials from emusic so I decided to pay for a month "out of kindness". I ended up adding a booster pack to my sub for that month, though.

I've also bought a few dozen songs from iTunes, a few of them exclusives. I have really mixed feelings about buying from them because of the whole copy protection thing they put on their files. Still, I think pay downloads are a decent (usually cheaper) way to get things like singles and EPs. Of course I'd take them for free if I had better access.

Could someone please explain why either of these options is in the least bit tempting? You never own anything - you rent. You stop paying and those files are no longer usable. This is the music industry's dream - you continue to pay for the same thing FOREVER because you'll never be able to just stop unless you just give up on music altogether. The only service I'd consider is Emusic because you actually own those files, and they're not DRM-corrupted files that you'll be stuck with should you ever get a player that doesn't support them.

And Emusic's apparently great for jazz fans, as they carry titles that aren't available on CD and probably never will be, from what I read.

But I say if you're going to pay, go buy the CDs, rip what you want, and trade/sell them to make back some of your money. At least you're not just throwing it away like with Rhapsody and Yahoo.

Here is what some people do with the subscription services

good call on Replay.

here's another Free option that will enable you to record streaming audio...

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

there are also apps that will strip the DRM from your files.

I don't see the original instructions thread, but if you just shoot Sketch a PM he should be able to set you up to start. It looks more difficult than it really is.

Though it has still has been a bear for some people... Garth (mypoorfriendme, where is he anway?) helped a few people out with this.

Aforementioned instructions thread.
