I have just witnessed what is one of the BEST shows I’ve seen in my lifetime. Sold out show in a small venue (Troubadour). People having bidding wars for spare tickets – I offered my extra ticket to a some dude for what I paid for ($32) only to have a girl walk up and offer me $50 (“I’ll pay more if you want, I REALLLLLY need to get in.”) The other kid ended up giving me 40 bucks cuz neither one of us had change.

Damien has his entire band accompany him. And, while he wasn’t his usual chatty self, it didn’t stop him from entertaining us for THREE hours. Yup, you read right, three hours. His encore alone was forty minutes along. Singing all our favourites, moving us with his and Lisa’s beautiful voices, I thought the night couldn’t get better. That is, until Herbie Hancock came out to accompany them onstage. Herbie fuckin’ Hancock, people! Apparently, he’s working on a new album and asked Damien and company to sing on it (one of the reasons why they were in town). Damien thought it only appropriate to invite him to the show. He performed one song with the band, thanked everyone and watched from the sidelines. I was rather disappointed he had such a brief appearance, I wanted MORE! The night was saving the REAL magic for later, when Herbie was invited back onstage during the encore and proceeded to have a 40 minute jam session -- it was fuckin’ amazing!

I can’t even tell you how lucky I am after being part of such a spectacular night. It will long live as one of the best shows ever.

Thought I’d let ya know about the spotted celebs tonight: Jennifer Love Hewitt and current squeeze, Orlando Bloom and Kate Bosworth and Wee Man.

Herbie is THE man, man.

I'd like to see he/Rice combine "Cannonball" with a funk/jazz version of Supertramp's "Cannonball" mixed with The Breeder's "Cannonball," done Cannonball Adderly-style.

I absolutely adore O and was one of my bigger surprises from this year, for me at least. It’s so heartfelt, warm, and powerful. You add to the fact that Lisa Hannigan is an angel with such a beautiful voice that complements Rice’s very well. It really is Rice’s vehicle with some amazing lyrics, beautifully sequenced and love the extra three songs on the end. He won the Short List prize in 2003 and was dismissed by most people. Too bad because they are missing out on a wonderful album.

I’m wish I could have been there and one day I will see shows again.

Some additional reviews from other fans:

Quote:
That was my first Damien Rice show and all I have to say is f**kING
AMAZING....by far the best live performance I have ever seen! And 3
hours long??? Talk about getting your money's worth!!! Also heard a
rumor that noah wylie was in the house....and could have sworn i saw
jennifer love hewitt? Apparently Damien brings the stars out. But
then again I could have just been delirious from the RIDICULOUS set I
was witnessing!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow.

Phenomenal show. All of "O" up to Eskimo, performed acoustic. Whole
band throughout. Started with a song I hadn't heard...top notch song.
Lisa sang another song I hadn't heard, a capella, perfect, beautiful.
Lonely Soldier, Baby Sister, Blowers Daughter II. I'm thinking that
Insane is one of his best songs. Viv performed a Rufus Wainright song
solo in her wonderful style.

The first set ended with Herbie Hancock joining on keyboards. Herbie
asked them to record with him yesterday, and they invited him to
tonight's show. With Herbie on keys, Damien and Lisa shared "Don't
Explain".

Because of the way the encore ended, I don't really remember what was
in there, though I think that's where something rolled into Be My
Husband. Hallelujah was in there too. Herbie came out and Lisa sang a
song I should know but don't. He added lots of beautiful keyboard
improve throughout the song, sometimes playing with Lisa's timing.
That rolled into this jam that included Damien scat singing riffs that
Herbie played on keys, with part of "Still Haven't Found What I'm
Looking For", all of Cheers Darlin', some of Glory Box, Damo and Lisa
singing imitating saxaphones, an all out straight-ahead jazz jam, and
finally Tomo, Shane, and Herbie running the train right to the end in
a blues rock jam with Damien throwing in funk riffs on an electric
guitar.

Like I said...wow

--------------------------------------------------------------------

- The thing that stands out the most is how happy
each band member seemed to be - especially
during the Herbie sit ins. Artists having fun in front of
a crowd is an easy theme for the evening. I've seen
Damien and band a handful of times, but I've never
seen all of them smile as much as they did last
night.

- Damien mentioned the set was going to be slightly
unplugged as they had just brought the equipment to
do this song (Blower's Daughter) on the TV show
(Leno). No distortion mic or guitar pedals.

- Then Go. They were about to start it and Lisa
whispered something to Damien and he indicated
no and she (ever so shyly) mentioned she didn't
want to bogart the show as she had just sung a
song the song before they were about to play it.

- Damien and Lisa scatting something vocally and
Herbie mimicking it on the piano. Amazing. (During
the last song/jam.)

- Damien singing off mic Hallelujah. Absolutely
gorgeous.

- Damien drumming his guitar and singing into it on I
Remember/Be My Husband.

- Vyvienne played the piano part to Cold Water after
Damien asked Herbie's permission so sweetly to
use his piano.

- The entire show had this feel to it like you were
watching something you'd never forget - especially
towards the end were you felt like somehow you had
been given a peep-hole to one of your favorite artists
rehearsal sessions. (That isn't meant to mean that
the performance wasn't perfect - it was beyond
perfect in so many ways. I just mean that there was
an improvisational element to it was similar that of
crashing a band practice. Very wonderful and
something I'll always feel grateful to have
witnessed.)
