Concurring with Billy.
Most everything I buy and end up liking is disposable to some degree.
Will I be spinning 2005 releases a few years from now that will ironically make my Top 10. Sadly enough, no.
But there will always be a couple of records that rise to the top and a few I'll wonder what the fuh did I ever hear in this anyway.
Songs of gravity and humor tend to win out...usually.

I'm really impressed with the depth of good-to-really-good releases this year. Probably not many on my year-end list would make a best-of-00s, but it's going to be really hard to make a Top 20 list because I'll want to include 35-40 on the list.

this is exactly how i feel.

Are there really many albums from that 35-40 though that you think you'll still listen to much 3-4 years from now? For me there's very few, which I is why I say you could more safely take this year off than most.

i agree with elephantstone, and think that what he's saying is actually that in 3-4 years from now, these won't be the most-listened to albums (of the 00's), but for a 1 year reflection, is a lot of good stuff to pick thru for a top 20 of 2005.

That's exactly what I'm saying (on behalf of self and j, I guess). Staying power separates 'good' from 'great' for me because I'm so focused on current releases. I don't remember the last 2003 release I listened to, for example, before Muse's Absolution last week. It doesn't mean that I don't enjoy '03 favorites like the Wrens or Prefuse 73 when I revisit them, but the desire to do so is very little. I rarely listen to any of my Listmania albums in their entirety more often than once a month. It's just a case of different priorities.

Nice. And hopefully 2006 will be more of the same as I dont see myself having much time or money for music. But then again, I need to start them early.

My recent reflection has been this. There is music that must be bought because of the music. Then there is the music that is bought due to the music buying mode. In the past, I have been a music-mode man... especially when I was living in Baltimore and there were a rather goodly number of shops where I could get good to very good releases used.

Now, the stores, while still decent, arent as cheap on used CDs, and are spread further out geographically. This curtailed my spending for a while- and gave me time to reflect on half of the stuff that is *good* but nothing that I would miss, or even feel bad about never hearing.

Which brings me back to the music-mode mentality.. buying X for the sake that you are at the store and Y sucks.

this thread is reminding me that i've been missing a lot of music this year. remember my attempt to not listen to new music? that lasted till the middle of february. then when i moved in april i lost the www at home and the ability to easily d/l and burn discs and all that glorious stuff i used to do to keep myself current. i let my CMJ subscription run out and i just don't have the time or patience for pfork anymore. f4df, i'm scared too! i'm going to see if i can hook myself back up in january. in the meantime:

i liked ry cooder, sufjan, and andrew bird - all pleasant listens and obviously essential for fans of their previous albums, but not making my top 20 most likely. SFA is also nice but not essential. i'd rather listen to my High Llamas cds than the new one. I'll have to give S-K and White Stripes more listens but again, they aren't cracking the top 20.

i like Beck's new one. i just like Beck. he's one of my fav musicians so i guess take the recommendation as you will.

originally i thought the new Tullycraft was their best work ever. Now after many many listens i've decided that the first half of "disenchanted hearts unite" is their best work ever and probably the nicest indie pop of the modern era. The second half of the album kind of goes down hill a bit though. the previous album, "Surf Beat Fun" is a more balanced, longer shelf-life disc.

i also liked the new Wolf Parade and The Boy Least Likely To...

I don't know how you can dismiss an entire year.

- Kent - Du & Jag Döden
- Iron & Wine - Woman King [EP]
- Graham Cousins - Living Room Sessions
- Stars - Set Yourself On Fire
- Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah [s/t]
- Heartless Bastards

all are top quality cd's.

The Test Icicles EP (out on Domino, Nov 1st) is going to rock your face off!
