A collection of classic punk plus new and no wave tunes that goes far beyond the obvious -- one that includes long heralded names such as Suicide and the Adverts, plus tons of names that we're personally seeing for the first time ever! What really puts this collection above and beyond the call of duty, other than sheer number of tunes, is the way of provides a snapshot of the era, warts and all. The floodgates tore open with ferocity of the first wave of punk trailblazers ran screaming through the culture, and this set snaps a vast portrait of the ensuing chaos! 51 tracks on 2CDs!

I'm surprised how little of this I know (Damned, Adverts, Suicide, Toy Dolls, Fab Poodles, Jilted John, Uk Subs & Sham 69) which could be a great thing or a sign of mediocrity. I'm intrigued though. How's it look to your eyes?

Good Lord, Billy, I don't know at least half these songs.

Awesome. Will get this.

I'll be getting this. I'm not enthusiastic over the live tracks, though. I've heard live recordings of the Adverts, Sham 69, UK Subs, etc. and the sound quality is usually pretty bad.

Lots of stuff I don't recognize, so I hope there's good liner notes.

I'll vouch for these.

John Cooper Clarke was a spoken word dude. Heavy northern accent and some pretty funny songs. "Cycle Sluts" and "Evidently Chickentown" were his, er, hits.

I've got Deaf School's English Boys/Working Girls on vinyl - that's were "All Queued Up" comes from - and I've been trying to hunt down either the CD version of the album or their 2-CD anthology for years now. Shit is hard to find.

If the band name wasn't enough of a William S. Burroughs tribute, Dead Fingers Talk also used a Burroughs quote for the title of their debut Storm The Reality Studios, which was produced by Mick Ronson. It's not bad, though way too musicianly to be considered among the British punk bands of the time. I haven't listened to the album in ages - I should pull it out and give it a shot.

Alberto Y Los Trios Paranoias were a bit of a joke band - and I really can't remember what the joke was. I think their debut was produced by Nick Lowe.

And then there's...

Quote:
4. Eater - 15 (Live)

One of the worst punk bands ever.

This comp showed up in the mail yesterday. Whoooo boy, vat a bargain at $15.99.

This was humbling, 'cause I thought I had a pretty decent singles collection, but this reminds me that there's so much more to acquire.

The liner notes are a hoot, I wish the guy that compiled this posted here.

"'Hunchback of Notre Dame' was later covered by that notoriously talent-free zone (and John Prescott favourites) Chumbawamba."

The few duds are included on purpose, I believe as an attempt to expose the crap that clung on to the fringes of the punk movement.

All in all some excellent, rare, and in many cases historically significant gems. You get stuff like The Nosebleeds, bands that were the breeding grounds for folks who went on to form bands like The Smiths.

Definitely worthwhile.

Oh yeah, the Eater track, it ain't so bad. It's a hopped up, faster cover of Alice Cooper's "Eighteen" dialed back three years.

I've got their "Outside View" single, and it's not so horrible either. I'd rate 'em ahead of, say, UK Subs.
