Can you guys help me help my Mom & sis?

They both want phones for emergencies, with mostly local calling, since neither travel too much (but still need it out of town once in a while). Something easy to use, since they're both in the tech Dark Ages.

I know virtually nada about 'em, so I told them I'd check around. Are there good sites out there that will explain useage, contracts and benefits/drawbacks?

Get them a pay as you go phone, Tmobile is good for this. Once they get a few months into it, you will then better understand their cell phone needs and can shop for the appropriate plan. While they might expect never to use it, they are women, and before you know it they will be cruising past the 500 minute mark heading for 1000+. Better to get a pay as you go for 6 months, then reassess the needs.

Ha - can't get a Sprint or Cingular pay-as-you-go phone right now, since they both got hit with an injunction for patent infringement.

I 2nd this...the reasons they're wanting a phone sound like the same ones why I bought mine.

I've got Virgin mobile...it could NOT be easier to use. And the way I have it set up, it only costs me $5 a month. Highly, highly recommended.

Yep, pre-pay. No commitment, low price. The downside is high per-minute price vs plans, but in their case, totally worth it.
