The Radcliffe Hallowe’en Rating Scale:
C.H.U.D. II – BUD THE CHUD – just plain shitty
Awesome!

6. THE NAVIGATORS I Can’t Breathe
I’m likin’ this a whole bunch. These dudes have gotta be Australian, kinda dirtying up the same mix of R&B and funk that INXS took to the bank.
Rating: DAWN OF THE DEAD
Saw this band open for Ike Reilly in New York in March. They cooked live, so I bought their two CD's in the lobby. I think they're from North Carolina or one of the southern Atlantic states. This is by far the best song on the albums, the rest lean toward acoustic not-quite-alt-country.

8. THE NEIGHBORHOODS Prettiest Girl
Another guess at locale: I’m thinking these guys are from the same Boston scene that spawned Scruffy the Cat. They’ve got the same sort of firm grasp on the verities of classic pop rock, the same sort of mid-tempo melodicism, and would’ve been yawned at just the same by the rest of the world for all the things that made ‘em good.

Ding ding ding. Duly impressed. This is the b-side to their "No Place Like Home Single" on Ace Of Hearts.

10. SPIRAL JETTY Big Downhill Racing
I keep waiting for this subdued little ditty to explode. Kinda relieved that it never does.

One of the local stand-outs from New Brunswick. One of the members was on the faculty of the English department. We hosted a homeless benefit at our house with these guys and Wooden Soldiers (which I believe I included on an earlier mix). They put out two stellar DIY albums before they signed with Homestead and fell to pieces.

11. THE A-BONES Satellite Dish
Shee-it, I love this kind of sleazy grind, with that filthy baritone sax and twangy gee-tar cutting through the noise. Makes me want to see the band live. Awesome stuff.
Rating: DAWN OF THE DEAD
Don't know if they're still around, I used to catch them at Maxwell's in Hoboken after seeing them open for The Fleshtones. Their stuff is all on their own label, Norton, which also re-released The Real Kids catalogue. Their debut eb "Free Beer For Life" is a cars, girls, and beers classic.

21. MARIE ET LES GARCONS Rebop Attitudes
Even though – and perhaps because - this steals wholesale the rhythm from "Twist And Shout", this is a lotta fun.

My thoughts exactly. I describe it as "archetypical french". It's utter nonsense, but sounds really cool.

23. COWBOYS INTERNATIONAL Thrash
Wasn’t this Keith Levene’s post-Clash pre-PIL band?
Correct again, the lead dude is Ken Lockie who scored minor fame with The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight.

23. PAT RUTHENSMEAR Lazy Bones
Fack. I can’t put my finger on what song this is based on. It’s driving me nuts. Anyway, bonus points for the couplet "you don’t have to be serious/ you don’t have to be a walrus."

Shonen Knife--this is from the comp "Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them".
Glad you're diggin' the mix. Thanks for the review!
