Not sure if there are any Soul Asylum fans on the board. I've never been a big fan, but my brother is, and I always keep up with what they're doing since they are a Minneapolis (my home town) band.

The local paper up there has a good review regarding their recent reunion show at 7th Street Entry.

They've got Tommy Stinson playing with them now.

Great melodies.
Generally terrible lyrics.
Although "Cartoon" is a damn near perfect song.

I hope they can make a comeback, because that means that melodic rock with actual balls is coming back, too.

Stinson should be able to help out with the lyrics - he learned more from Westerberg than Westerberg himself - although Stinson only seems to be able to come up with half an album of great songs. But add that to Pirner's quarter of an album of pretty okay songs and you've got yourself a decent disc.

I just found out like two days ago that they're back/still together. I thought they broke up after their Best Of was released. I've always been a fan.

Gin Blossoms are reunited too. What's this world coming to?

I've always liked Soul Asylum, Grave Dancers Union was a great pop record. I'd definitely be interested in seeing what they'd do with Tommy Stinson.

I think Gin Blossoms were nothing without Doug Hopkins.

I think they're going to do a tour after their record comes out next spring. I've seen them live a bunch of times and they always put on a fun show.

I'm impressed they crammed 500 warm bodies into the Entry. That's a small space.

That's funny. When I read that line I had the same reaction. I'm still not sure I believe they got 500 people in there. And if they did it had to be way over capacity.

I'm a fan. From what I know, Tommy's just helping them out for these 2-3 shows....he's not officially in the band.

I think it'd be a great idea, though.

The articles I've seen don't really make it clear about how long Tommy will be involved. But, I think you're right that he's only doing this for a short time.

Too bad really, it'd be cool if he joined up for the whole tour.

Here's a nugget from Tommy's site :

And lastly, but not at all leastly, I've been learning some Soul Asylum songs for a show in N.Y.C on Oct.26th at the Bowery Ballroom. Yep, I'll be filling in for Karl. I'm told he would have wanted it this way so this is for him as well as Danny, Dave and Mary Beth. At the moment, that's all I know for certain. ( tommystinson.com )
