But see, if they respond by going even further over the top of Reid, they look like the petty, petulant thugs that they are. Just cos they have a majority, doesn't mean they represent everyone, and Reid and Co. got em with a good blind side shot. What they need to do now is rush 'em, and not let them get the upper hand, cos if they do, this beating gets ugly like in Dazed and Confused.

What's impressive to me is that I've heard/seen interviews with four different Dem. Senators in the past day and they all articulated the Why of this thing using the exact same language.

Classic political textbook and shows there might actually be some leadership at work. Though it could just be an aberration.

Until they show its consistent, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I still say the overall IDEA of another "War Election" is a loser, but at least they aren't in the corner licking their taints for the time being.

Agreed.

Hey, do you think that Hillary may be the only Dem candidate who can avoid running the "War Election" campaign?

Not sure, cos she will need those people to win the primary, and they won't be hoodwinked again after the Kerry thing.

Richardson may be able to pull some kind of Peace with Honor thing, especially considering his N. Korea bonafides.

I don't MIND Hillary, but I also don't really wanna go through another Clinton campaign cycle, and would probably end up divorced/excommunicated/and dead on the side of the road with no friends if I worked for her ;)

In order to appease the "We should appoint a woman" crowd, Alito will flash his man-titties during the confirmation hearings, prompting Democrat Harry Reid to call for another "closed door session."

I'd disagree with him on just about every issue, but he seems like a fairly honest and intelligent man. I'd hate to see somebody not confirmed solely because of political reasons - they should save the big fights for the crooks, cronies, and scoundrels in government. Right now, politicians treat everyone on the other side of the aisle as dishonest.

I agree with this to a certain extent. To wit: Judicial appointments should be apolitical. Now I'm fucking curious. And despite having degrees in Political Science and History, I can honestly say (and worse yet, ADMIT) that I know very little about the history of politicizing these Supreme Court deals.

I mean, I'm not a dumb fuck, I could rattle off some interesting anecdotes, mostly from the early days and anything since WWII. What I mean is: Were Justices being grilled or projected on their positions on abolition, silver, prohibition and the like?

Great, more fucking shit to put in the "to be researched extensively" stack.

Is it even remotely possible for a judicial nomination to be apolitical?

Sure. Ever vote for a judge? I dont't usually let their political affiliations play into my descision. I typically vote for law and order Nazis or anybody who let Scotty D walk easy on some beat-a-bitch charges.

Here's a list of rejected nominees.

The funny part is when you go down the list, LBJ put up Abe Fortas, whom the Southern Democrats and conservative Republicans who, in retaliation for the "runaway" Warren Court, fillibustered until Fortas withdrew, which put the nomination into incoming President Nixon's hands, who nominated Harold Carswell.

Carswell got rejected for his high reversal rate (58%) and a speech white supremacy he gave in 1948. After Carswell was dumped, Nixon appoints Harry Blackmun, who is confirmed and goes on to write the majority opinion in Roe.

Thanks for that. Your boy Tyler had a bad run there for minute, eh?

Not surprising that Grant had three go down. That dude is the hands down "big laughingstock" president. I know that there are some busters who might throw out J.C. (they are people with third grade educations who listen to Sean Hannity for "news") but Jimmy C. stands taller than Lincoln in comparison to the shameful, drunken, whoremonger, US Grant.

Don't piss on U.S. Grant like that. Most famous American of the 19th Century, hands down. He and his wife were met by huge crowds of people when they toured the world after his retirement. Dude was a fucking hero who got dragged down by his own political naivete and some scandals around him.

Great. That's like saying "Don't piss on Michael Jackson"

I'll not deny that he was a war hero but he so sullied the White House that it left stains that would not come off with soap and water.

Blech.

And wasn't Fortas his personal lawyer? or best friend or something?

NOBODY remember yesterday, much last the political scandals of yesteryear. That's why all this "Worse than Watergate" talk is like trotting out Boss Tweed or Teapot Dome: Everyone remembers that Watergate is bad, but not WHAT THE FUCK REALLY HAPPENED

Yeah greeting crowds of the cheering while openly wasted is much easier than reigning in your buddies' looting of the country.

I think it will go straight party line after the Dems do indeed filibuster, and the GOP successfully uses the Nuclear Option. I think some documents will come out that reveal Alito to truly be a Scalia/Thomas type, and everyone on the fence will retreat to their respective camps.
I was excited to see the Closed Door session, The GOP Congress gave up their oversight powers to a Presidential Administration facing a ton of controversies. The Dems were just showing the GOP that they still had some backbone and that they weren't about to allow the White House to get off easy without a proper congressional investigation.
