so i've been on a major league funk and soul kick for the last year or so, and i've come across a bunch of tracks that are so excellent that i feel compelled to share them. i have no illusions that i'm some sort of crate digging jesus, and a lot of these tracks will be pretty obvious to anybody thats been on a similar kick--i just hope that i can call some attention to the greatness of some this stuff through what i hope will be semi-regular posts. but enough disclaimers...

firs up, ms. betty harris. every bit as sassy as aretha, but with a gritty new orleans swagger. the stripped down production genius comes courtesy of allen toussaint, and her backing band went on the become the fucking meters. in this track she sings in car metaphors on top of some crushingly hard drums, predicting the future downfall of a former lover. check it out, discuss, listen to repeatedly.

betty harris - break in the road

Toussaint remains greatly underappreciated. Dude is sick.

that's a pretty easy answer because [img][300:300]http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000AMUUGC.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg[/img]

is pretty much the only thing you'll be able to find. It happily was reissued this year....I'd been looking for it for years.
