I am starting the process of researching the Indian Removal Act and the ensuing "trail of tears" in order to write a paper/take notes so as to have a basis for screenwriting a documentary film. I was wondering if anyone on this board knows of any music that is culturally linked to that people?

any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

if any place has them, i would suspect a big enough library might have some. be warned, finding traditional native american music can be quite hard because so little of it has been recorded.

which tribal affiliation? i've heard some stuff from the PNW that I got at the library, and some stuff from the northern midwest, and then there's the new-agey flute dreck that gets pawned off as if it were authentic native american music . . .

libraries (especially libraries with reference librarians) rawk.

well, I haven't narrowed it down to which tribes exactly. Right now my focus is leaning towards examining the Indian Removal Act and then following the trail of tears from start to finish....which I believe began in Florida or somewhere near there...I am not even sure which native american groups were the significantly affected on the trail of tears. I just know it's horrible. Also, if you haven't read the Indian Removal Act, written by Andrew Jackson and presented to Congress..I challenge you to do so. It is pretty unreal, especially the language with which it is written.

Let me link you to it:

Andrew Jackson's case for the Removal Act. First Annual Message to Congress 8 December, 1830

As authentic as it gets:

Europe - Cherokee Lyrics

They lived in peace, not long ago
A mighty Indian tribe
But the winds of change,
Made them realize, that the promises were lies.
The white man's greed, in search of gold
Made the nation bleed
They lost their faith
And now they hade to learn
There was no place to return
Nowhere they could turn.
Cherokee - marching on the trail of tears.
They were driven hard, across the plains
And walked for many moons
Cause the winds of change,
Had made them realize, that the promises were lies.
So much to bear, all that pain
Left them in despair
They lost their faith
And now they hade to learn
There was no place to return
Nowhere they could turn.

Feel free to quote that in your paper.

I'll be sure to tote a tape recorder to the toilet next time I go.

You get smoke signals and everything.

Lee Hazelwood - "The Nights"

(For other than a serious suggestion, it might prove apropos for your piece.)

Was there any effort made in the 30's through Works Progress to record any of this stuff like was done with the blues and former slave interview field recordings? I honestly don't know.

But yeah, The Library of Congress is probly your first shopping stop.

And who gives a fuck about Indians anyway?

WOW...and wasn't the trail of tears marched by many firewater lovers through GA? I mean, isn't McIntosh named The Chiefs or The Redmen or something now-deemed offensive?

Yeah, so hows about this: I'm offended by people who are regarded as either drunks or runners of crooked casinos (both true). Bottom line, you lost. (except for Chief Noc-A-Homa))

Now the Notre Dame logo would be offensive to me, were I Irish, but I'm not.

Nah, these Arabs seem to be resistant to our filthy diseases. We'll have to try something else like the aforementioned typhoid spraying.

hmmmm.

Try googling any of these, and see what you get. They played on Robbie Robertson's Music For The Native Americans soundtrack (which is excellent, btw).
