I went to the Bright Eyes/Spoon show in Omaha on Friday night at the historical Orpheum Theatre. It was absolutely amazing. The acoustics in that place were incredible. We had great seats in the loge section near one of the boxes.
Willy Mason played first. His voice and guitar alone in that large theatre were eerily beautiful. I hadn't ever seen them or really listened to too much of his music, but he sort of reminded me of a poor man's Springsteen with a hint of Tom Petty in his voice.
David Dondero played second. It was my fourth time seeing him, so there wasn't much different this time than the last time a couple months ago. Although I'm pretty sure he has now moved to Omaha.
Spoon played third. They basically played the first half of their set without ever taking a break. They really jammed out alot and seemed to extend a good deal of their songs. It was mostly Gimme Fiction material, with Small Stakes and That's the way we get by thrown in.
Bright Eyes was the headliner and would have been blown off the stage by Spoon if he had not opened up with Sunrise,Sunset. He had a harpist who jammed out for several minutes before starting the song. Then the band quickly joined her on stage.
The rest of his set was decent, but his drunkeness was on the verge of ruining his show. Luckily he closed the show with Let's not shit ourselves, which seems to be very popular with his crowd. Willy Mason joined him on stage and jammed out on the harmonica for six minutes.
