NEW YORK - Black Sabbath, Miles Davis and the Sex Pistols are among five musical legends to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation will hold its induction ceremony March 13 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, the organization announced Monday.

Also to be inducted into the class of 2006: 1980s New Wave band Blondie and Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, who founded A&M records in 1962, will receive a lifetime achievement award in the non-performer category.

Inductees into the side-men category will be announced at a later date.

Musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote on the nominations. Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock Hall after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released.

I keep wanting to say this HOF is lame, but then I keep reading articles about the inductees.

<--is not a big fan of the Sex Pistols, and thinks they are highly over-rated.

I'm mildly interested to see every year or whenever they elect, to see who they deem "good enough" to make it in. A lot has to do with popularity at the moment...hence, why I think Black Sabbath is getting in. No doubt they have massive influence over punk, hardcore, metal musicians, but I couldn't see them getting as much pull if they weren't gaining a resurgance from a younger generation. Their songs are in films, they sell out OzzFest dates, etc.

Blondie sort of surprises me. As much as I love them, I don't know if I could make an argument as to why they should be remembered as a influential band.

What's up too with jazz, blues, off genre people making the grade? I know we all can make claims about Miles, but is influence enough pull?

I'd've put Grandmaster Flash in, definitely. Probably Stooges too.

Grandmaster-yup
Cat Stevens-sure
and Lynyrd Skynyrd...odd I know based on my previous comments but I can back 'em up!

The interesting thing with Sabbath is whether or not Bill Ward joins them.

If I'm not mistaken it is if yr nominated 7 times yr automatically in. Since this happened to the Velvet Underground. But I wanted someone to double check me.

Quote:
REED: I thought it would be this incredible streak. Like, nominated 21 years in a row and then they'd have this, like, rule...I think it's the Velvet Underground rule. If you're nominated seven times, you get in. I think that was...People were trying to get us in, trying to go around. Yeah, I was very surprised we got in.
from MTV.com

did some searching and its true.

So Black Sabbath were a definite since they've had 7 previous noms.

What's the procedure for adding/subtracting someone from the ballot then? Will every artist on this year's ballot eventually be on seven? I doubt it, but how do they get removed?

I think they have to be put on the ballot anew each year -- I.E. slate gets wiped clean afterwards.

Yup, for better or worse Black Sabbath is now universally recognized as an 'important band'

Based on what they seem to look for, Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of their most glaring omissions. What exactly was missing for it to take so long?

Cat Stevens was lobbied for by Eddie Vedder among others at the behest of Johnny Ramone. I read somewhere that connected people often push hard for particular artists--thus the sometimes odd nominees.

John Mellencamp stands out as a reach nominee but if Tom Petty can not just be nominated but actually get in, I guess anything is possible. Dave Clark Five? They actually had had 17 top 40 hits hit but still not the best nomination.

The Sex Pistols are obvious. I read in an article that they have always been 'on the cusp' but more conservative elements, i.e., really old guys who I guess were already old in 1977 always found a way to keep them out. Oooohhh, they have the word 'sex' in their name and that singer had a really bad attitude, didn't he?

I'm a Blondie fan but they are a pretty marginal inductee. I'd go Chic before them. Think about the influence.

Based on the 70's albums, Miles Davis, on paper, is obvious for a 'rock' in its broadest sense hall of fame. But it's called the 'rock and roll' hall so...

and that's a very good thing.

anything remotely "metal" can thank Sabbath.

they're the reason i'm obsessed with music.

I'm not really a Sabbath fan (mainly due to lack of exposure) but their influence is pretty undeniable and deserve to be recognized as a pioneer.

Were they left off the ballot earlier or did they ask to not be considered?

If I remember correctly Ozzy made some stink about it.

You haven't heard of the Dave Clark Five? They are in the "Oldies" class now I think but they had a lot of hits.
