thank you! I was pretty excited. Even though the Art Institute of Chicago is supposed to be the best art school out there, I think Pratt is a great accomplishment. I'm very excited. I'm not sure if i'm actually going to go yet, though, seeing as though I haven't entered an application or not. It just was a great boost to my confidence to hear they liked my stuff. I thought she was kidding.

It would be really cool to get into Cooper Union, too, though. I don't know. That's just another thing I feel like I absolutely cannot accomplish that would make me feel incredible if I did. Like I said before, they only accept 65 out of an estimated 1,200 applicants. That's a very small number and it's highly unlikely that I of all people would get in.

But it's worth a shot isn't it? The lady had nice things to say, I just have to come up with a fucking incredible piece for the home test if I can even be considered.

Be more positive, cp. Sounds like you got some really good feedback today. Yeah, the odds seem stacked, but sometimes it swings your way. When I was doing my PhD I applied for government funding. It was long shot AT BEST, as they funded less than 100 across all of Canada. Odds stacked against me but, miracle of miracles, I got the it. Happiest fucking day of my life. Sometimes the nearly impossible happens.

that's incredible! I was just discouraged because I didn't get this portfolio based scholarship so.. it kind of made me feel less of my art. Oh well. I feel really great now!

CP,

Here's some advice as someone who got in and couldn't afford to go there.

#1 first get in, do the project and get your ass accepted.make them think you are the best thing since sliced bread. And remember- she liked your work, so you do have talent, you are good enough for her to say that she didn't need to see your book!

#2 Once you get in take a tour of the school and try to meet as many of the first year teachers as possible.

#3 after you are accepted and sure you are in. Ask to talk to your advisor, tell them that you would really like to go there but it's between Pratt and another school that is willing to provide you with SOME funding or is less expensive. Pratt and all schools have some kind of an endowment fund. they won't tell you but they do.

I went there for three years and only had to pay for less than half of my tuition. they figured out how to come up with the rest.

And Don't be afraid to take out a student loan. I know that lots have changed since I went to school but I wouldn't have been able to do it without my loans-all since paid back.

It'll only be a merry christmas if I can somehow find the money to pay for it, and if my grades are good enough for them, which they aren't, but if they let it slide i'm in.

I say that we take up a collection to help pay for her college edumacation. I will stand out in the street like a firefighter and collect spare change in my hat for an hour.

Seriously though, having known people who have sent portfolios for that and hearing both stories of success and failure, that is a really cool accomplishment. Congratulations and well done.

Yes. Free school. In New York nonetheless. Isn't that amazing? If I went you'd be the first person I visited!
And the first Obner I will have met thus far!

You do have to pay the cost of living though. In New York I imagine it's pretty high, but nothing beats saving 30,000 dollars a year to go to art school to pay a couple thousand for supplies and food.

That's awesome!

(And although I say it in a humorous tone [think: South Park], it is entirely sincere.)

He doesn't count. I met him far before I discovered Obner. Actually... I think we were about half a year into our relationship when I discovered CMJ. Except I didn't post there.

Is SCAD (down in savannah GA) still a well-regarded art school? We were given the impression that it was when I was in high school.

Yeah it's a good art school, I heard it isn't accredited for art, but for architecture it is.. Maybe i'm wrong, but my friend who attended a summer program there told me that yesterday.

I went to Savannah two weeks ago, and I kind of liked being there for the day, but I don't think it's my ideal college city.

If you like colonial architecture, riverfront bars, and empty crack vials, Savannah is the shit. It is also mysteriously home to the country's 2nd-largest St Pat's Day celebration*, which is wierd. I think only Chicago tops it, or maybe Boston.

* - "celebration" meaning 300,000 drunken college kids who were too drunk to drive to panama city, and who crowd onto the streets, drink green Bud Light and grab girls' assess. And film it.

Just another reason to not go to Savannah
