Well, let's put 'strange' in context. Liking Tom Waits at all is strange (in a he's-not-exactly-stereotypical-top-40 way) -- don't necessarily take that as an insult. When people tell me I'm strange, I say, 'thank you' -- because it means I'm unique...at least a little.

Although, if there is an alternate universe in which Tom Waits is stereotypical top 40, please give me directions.

I can give you directions to my brain but i'm not so sure if it's a universe you can live in.
I would probably have a headache for the rest of my life if I had another human living in my head.

Gregg Alexander is the poor-whiteboy-with questionable taste-'s Jon Brion.

Don't get me wrong, Alexander has talent and a good sense of melody, but debasing yourself in such a manner to meet him is appallingly pathetic. If it were to meet Brion, well that would be totally acceptable and you'd have my understanding, and best wishes.

Hey, we all have our musical obsessions and Gregg Alexander just happens to be one of mine. I don't expect anyone to understand my love for him.

I like Ellen.
She is like Oprah, but someone that it seems you can hang out with.
She is cool.
If I were a gay woman, I would so be in love with her.
Truth be told, I am a little bit anyway (and have been since before she was Out).

I saw it once while I was waiting to get my tires rotated. I still think Vance is the funnier DeGeneres, and he was in band called the Back Beats, which had members of the soon-to-be Cowboy Mouth.

Is this a selling point?

It would seem that Cowboy Mouth would still be closer to that pillow-fights and doilies shee' that you loath than to the scuzzy garage and lo-fi pluck that you prefer.

But maybe I just havn't heard the right CM.

People are strange, when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
People seem wicked, when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven, when you're down

When you're strange- faces come out of the rain (rain, rain)
When you're strange- no one remembers your name
When you're strange, when you're strange, when you're str-ange
Morrison was such a glass-is-half-empty kind of guy.

I prefer Tonio K.

Was Paul Sanchez in that band?

I was only aware of Dash Rip Rock as being a Cowboy Mouth precursor.

And while we're on the subject----ever heard any of Sanchez's solo stuff? Not bad.

i fell in love with tom waits when i saw him perform in 1999. prior to the concert, i had never even heard of the guy. he's just incredible. has anyone seen him on that fishing show with a host named john? i've seen it on ifc, i think, and john takes waits fishing and tom puts a fish down his pants. crazy shit.

unrelated, if i had to choose a lesbo couple to get it on with, it would definitely be portia and ellen. i would need to do it with some girly-girls... indigo girls and kd lang and etheridge are all waaaaay out of the question.

I don't get Ellen. I don't think she's funny at all. I have enough people around me who've got the self-deprecating "let me make fun of myself" thing down pat.

Oprah on the other hand, well, as much as I respect her, she can be very irritating at times. I hate how she's always looking into the camera when she has a guest on who is speaking to her, and she's not looking at them. I hate how she goes on and on about all these products she loves that her core audience can't afford. I hate how she gets all "ghetto" with her talk, when truth be told, she wouldn't be caught dead in the ghetto or talking with folks from the ghetto (her New Orleans "very special 2 part episode" an exception). I hate all the self-aggrandizing she does on her show... you're a success, Oprah, we get it. Do we really need to see how your hairdresser was given the bonus of decorating the guest house of your California home, one of your many houses that span the globe? BUT, you do have to give the woman props for giving her money away the way she does, to all the various causes she supports.

Fred LeBlanc & Paul Sanchez were in The Backbeats. A roommate of mine had an LP, but we didn't have a turntable. I never was a fan of Cowboy Mouth, but there were quite a few Ruston musicians that were friends with the guys.

cool, I was never a Cowboy Mouth fan either (even though Fred called me out as "the biggest asshole in Athens" because I wouldnt come up front to see them (there were openly 12 people in the crowd and I didnt really feel like any of them needed my help so i just sat in the seats by myself, stoned out of my mind);

my bro used to run into them all the time when he lived in NO--he's the one who turned me on to Dash (who I saw once and actually liked) and Paul S.

Cowboy Mouth had their Ruston detractors, but mostly for the warbly vocals that were goofy. Most of the guys I was friends with generally spoke amicably about them, unlike the disdain they held for Jeff Mangum and the other E6 guys outside of Ross Beach. I hung with Ross a few times, but he didn't like me much after I publicly (and drunkenly) berated some fucking bitch manatee that almost hit me on the sidewalk with a Plymouth Voyager in Baton Rouge.

Yeah, I hated the non-Sanchez CM shit---garbage.

And a lot of people in Athens weren't real hot on the E6 guys either. Probly professional jealousy and I know I throw Mangum under the bus a lot for being an SOB but I honestly have never even shook his hand; Will and Bill from OTC I've actually spoken to a few times and they seem like OK guys.

The big Ruston beef was the E6 guys went off and claimed Athens as their home, when they grew up with a lot of guys who were content to stay and play in Ruston. There was also a lot of bad feeling toward Better Than Ezra, who had some sort of NoCenLa roots (I think at least one or more were from West Monroe, but I don't remember) but claimed New Orleans.
