I made another trip back to Tower today to rummage through the .49 cent bins. Two winners I picked up were Owsley's '99 s/t release, which kinda reminds me of a mellower Candyskins mixed with Ben Folds.
Quote:
Another of Owsley's old bands contained Ben Folds, and their like-mindedness is hard to miss; this album's "Zavelow House" and "Sonny Boy" are practically Ben homages. While both craft pop hooks which make similarly instant impressions, Owsley toughens them up with meatier singing and crunching guitars, avoiding the occasional maudlin sensibilities of Folds' stuff — the "wimp factor" is wisely absent here.

Another score is an amazing compilation put out by Six Degrees Records, called Torch, a collection of modern torch songs. Some of the songs are very electronic, which surprised me, but the real capper is a tune at the end of the disc by Roy Nathanson, feat. Elvis Costello, which made me get out from in front of the computer to the couch and bask in the audio sweetness of Fire Suite 1. Wow. I haven't gotten chills in a while, but this did it. Other artists on the disc include: Cassandra Wilson, Sylk, Snooze, Mandalay, Shrift, dZihan & Kamien and Xploding Plastix. Who? That's what I thought, but it's very nice. Perfect makeout music. 8)

Samples from Torch are here, on the left of the screen.

Thanks again, Tower. :)

One of the towers in this neighborhood has a cheapo bin, but it's one of the far ones that I only hit about 2ce/yr.
