When I was schooling in Waco, TX... there was an article about how 3 of the 10 richest people were panhandlers. Believe it or not, there are ridiculously rich folks there. One guy made $800,000 one year, begging by an on-ramp.

You combine that with the droves of homeless in Chicago that will turn down food because all they want is money for booze (my buddy offered a cheeseburger once, only to have it thrown at him because he didn't give cash), I find it extremely hard to feel anything towards them.

Word to the wise, you shake a tin can in my face, I ain't giving you any silver.

I don't give money. I used to. I gave a dollar to a homeless man and then he licked and sucked on my neck.
I give food now.

i feel sympathy on a case by case basis. there are lots of people who deserve a little sympathy, but there are some who are trying to take advantage of people, which is absolutely despicable.

This is a pic of Paisano, the resident celebrity (and solo) homeless guy here in San pedro. Legend has it he used to be wealthy, and cracked out, he is from Palestine, and when I give him a ride on my golf cart, he'll sing me songs in Arabic, he gets up on stage and jams air guitar with the bands that play at Fido's everyone I know gives him a few bucks or something every time they see him. i gave him two bananas and $5 BZD two days before Christmas, his favorite word is "cocksucker!" and he yells it often and purposefully. If (when) he dies, 2000 people will attend his funeral. No shit.

Whenever in the situation to help a homeless person that asks for money to get some food, I try and tell them that I will take them to a place and buy them food rather than give them money because that way they won't take my 5 bucks and buy a couple 40's or use it for some other item that is not a basic need. Some have denied my offer. Others have taken it graciously. Some have tried to argue with me to just give them money and then eventually let me buy them food. That's one way I try to discern which type of "homeless" I am dealing with.

I do this too. If they're truly down on their luck, they'll welcome anything because anything helps. If they're just looking for money for drugs or alcohol, you'll know - they don't want food. The times I've offered food, the guys have always been very happy to receive it.

The one that still tears my heart out when I think about him is the guy who was mute or deaf, and he sat outside a nearby music store. It was obvious this guy was more than simply down on his luck. He had the saddest eyes, and as you approached, if you made eye contact, he would raise his eyebrows and then look down at this rolled up cloth, which he would unroll to reveal a bunch of rocks, each tied with a little bow of wire. I felt really bad not giving him money - I didn't have a penny on me, just a bunch of CDs for trade. I would have happily bought a rock from him, and bought him lunch.
