what's the deal on these books:

Can't Stop, Won't Stop (the history of hip-hop book)

Punk (or variations of, i'm looking for a good history of Punk book)

33 1/3 In The Aeroplane Over The Sea ...i heard this is out or is coming out. i did not see it at barnes and noble though...

ok that is all

also, other music book recommendations are welcome, preferrably about genres/scenes moreso than about musicians or bands.

'England's Dreaming' by Jon Savage is generally regarded as the best book about punk, at least from a UK perspective (Sex Pistols, Clash etc).

I only flicked through it in the library a long time ago so I can't really tell you if it lives up to its billing.

My favorite two music books are

Milk it by Jim Derogatis which is all about music in the 90's. Great articles about Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, Ween, etc.

My Band could be Your Life which is profiles of 13 Alt. bands in the 80's including Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, etc.

Great book, and a nice refresher course for me on bands I forgot about and let fall by the wayside (Butthole Surfers).

Please Kill Me is a pretty damn good punk book imo. Not so much of a narrative as it is bits and pieces of interviews. I really like this style of telling a story, and it is used in Lexicon Devil as well.

I don't know if this is a tell me about these books or recommend me books thread but--

Mountains of Music: West Virginia Traditional Music from Goldenseal is one of the best books I've read on a specialized area of music. Goldenseal is a mag dedicated to WV life and all the musician profiles in the book come from articles from said mag. If you like old time or bluegrass, then I highly recommend this to you. I've met the editor of the book a bunch of time at outings and he is a really nice guy. Great musician and knows his stuff.

I've said it a hundred times: The Fascist Bathroom (I think is the new title) by Greil Marcus.

It was excellent at parts and rather boring at others. I don't care about tagging and that went on too long imo. There was a lot of information that didn't pertain to music in it as well, like events taking place in certain periods of hip hop, but then one could argue one's songs can be based on what is taking place in the world at any given time. I dunno. The only thing I really took from it was the song by NWA-Give me something to dance to

If I could remember more, I'd say something relevant.

I'm reading this now..

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/080213 ... e&n=283155

Dri listed it awhile back. It's excellent and highly recommended.

I nearly picked that up the other night. It seemed to be more in step with the evolution of a DJ and into hip hop than 'CSWS'.

i gave the hip-hop book to a friend, who found it far more dry than she was expecting.

I must have at least 50 good books about music at home, but trying to think of any of them right now is drawing a blank.

This has gotten really good reviews but I haven't seen it anywhere. I guess $20 isn't too much to buy on a whim and hope for the best.

"Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" is an excellent read. I love that book.
