Perenially naff college pop band Weezer are to play legendary avant-garde drug guzzlers The Velvet Underground in a forthcoming movie, PlayLouder is somewhat bemused to report.
Factory Girl, a biopic of Edie Sedgewick, sees Weezer's guitarist playing the role of Lou Reed, while the drummer Patrick Wilson is to play John Cale. Mr Reed has described the film's script as "one of the most disgusting, foul things I've seen - by any illiterate retard - in a long time," so no doubt he'll be thrilled to have his musical legacy interpreted by Weezer.
As part of their starring role, Weezer also covered The Velvet's classic 'Heroin'. Gulp! Did they change the lyrics to be about a cheeky bifta behind the bike sheds?
What's more, the daft clowns reckon that their version is "better" than the original! Bell says he does have nobel intentions, though: "maybe we might help turn a new generation on to this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners," he said. "If your music has steered too far from the aesthetic of the Velvet Underground you have to ask yourself, 'What the hell am I trying to do?'"
