Man, I've never even HEARD of yacht rock. Anybody got a list of all these sub-genres?

Yacht rock is recreational upper crust soft rock, mid 70s-mid 80's mostly, with a rich-hippie bent In other words, if you're sitting on your ass on a boat, beach or cabana listen to puss music, what's the best kind?

I gotta go with any number of Seals & Crofts albums. Maybe Dr. Hook.

Though, on the high end, the end that's actually worthwhile, you could tack on Steely Dan and Cat Stevens.

lets not forget the loafers with no socks

I think yacht rock was once used to lump together a bunch of musically sophisticated soft rockers who played on one anothers' albums.

The common thread appeared to be Michael McDonald, who has always been throughout time and space, unchanging, omnipresent, diffident and hairy.

What tentoze said, but I must admit....when I saw the term yacht rock, the first thing that came into my head was Don Johnson.

I would say The Commodores, Lionel, Billy Ocean and Ray Parker, Jr. are all acceptable to the yacht pack, though not necessarily a part of the original sect.

Lionel Richie and Billy Ocean, perhaps, but Ray Parker Jr. -- no -- and Commodores -- L no.

REO Speedwagon and Foreigner

And before you set sail, the consummate yacht club toast:

It's easy to grin, when your ship has come in,
and you have the stock market beat.
But the man worthwhile
is the man who can smile
when his pants are too tight in the seat!

This song is incredible for two reasons in particular:
1. Lionel really lets the Tuskeegee come through.
2. The line: "You know it ain't so hard to say / Would you please just go away"
