With promo help from the paper, I've started a new night @ a pub downtown called UB the DJ, where people can bring in their MP3 players or a burned mix and sign up to get 20 minutes to play whatever they want - only rule is you can't play the same artist twice.

It's like open-mic DJ. Last night was the first night and the turnout was OK, especially since we're soft launching it.

Anyway, here's the playlist.

Feel free to praise and pillory as you see fit.

I'm almost completely illiterate when it comes to King Crimson, so I was a little worried about this one when the guy told me what was on his playlist, but it worked really well.

Moments like that are what I think will make this pretty cool.

I see a few artists up there more than once.

Cool idea. Does the person get to wear one of those big sets of earphones over one ear only? and act like they are scratching records?

Hah hah! Not yet, but that's something we may have to work in as we evolve - kinda like the birthday crown @ Chuck E. Cheese.

As to the repeats, those were different people playing different sets. Since there's no way for everyone to know what everyone else is planning to play when they pre-make their playlist, it's OK if the same artist shows up in different sets throughout the night. But one person can't repeat the same artist in their own set.

This was established so obnoxious Sublime, Phish or Doors fans (for example) don't turn their 20 mins into a de facto greatest hits set and bore everyone else to tears.
