Life is life. Salad is murder.

I try to save pests when I find them in my house, but if I step on a critter by accidents I don't feel guilty about it.

Look, you're a teenager -- you're already sensitive and your imagination runs away with you. You really shouldn't do drugs. Just give the wacky terbacky a break for a week or two, everything'll be fine.

I was just making fun of the wackiness of your query. Don't mind me.

I rarely kill spiders. I like to keep them around to kill and eat the other pests. Two exceptions: If it's getting tarantular, I'll kill it, and if there are eggs, I kill them. I guess that makes me a Liberal, since I'm all for squashing the fat cat at the top of the heap and mass abortions.

I always kill the camel crickets, though I haven't seen any in a while.

I have always done well with animals to near-doolittlean proportions, regardless of how uncuddly they might be. I guess that is a large part of why I'm a biologist.

I'm with my biologist friend here. My background is in neuroscience, so I have assisted in euthanizing many animals. Unlike him however, I do not do well with animals so I've been using the next best thing: people.

Based on my readings, I've always assumed that insects can sense some sense of that vague construct known as 'pain'. I do think that anthropomorphizing what we 'feel' as pain to what insects and some animals experience in order to increase their ability to survive is in no way equivalent.

And I'm not touching that any animal/consciousness argument. That gets too heated for words. People are way too into animals to logically debate this issue without insults and a heavy reliance on anecdotes.

Yeah, I agree. I think insects feel 'pain' but might not have a system of processing that that 'pain' actually 'hurts.' The bugs might not necessarily equate that 'pain' is a horrible sensation, but I think they feel it.

But in the theory that they have families to take care of, wouldn't picking up said insect and taking it outside be the same as one of yr parents mysteriously dissappearing only to find out they've been taken to say California?

But do insects have "families" to take care of? I thought most insects lay their eggs and move on, or in some cases take care of the eggs until they hatch, then move on, leaving the li'l 'uns to fend for themselves.

This thread is the most pathetic pile of bunk that I've ever "scanned". I find that there are much more significant things to consider than stomping a friggin' bug.

There's never a thing so insignificant it doesn't merit a thread.

Next up: that grate on the bottom of the fridge, has anyone ever seen one attached properly?

But I don't buy the "animals can't think or feel love" argument, either.

Grow up with farm animals and you know that's nonsense.

And no, I don't think that lamb was coming on to you.
