Then I guess 20 minutes from Galesville is a good place for you to hide... er... operate from.

To tell the truth
Galesville scares me
Not a friendly little town
The other kind of little town

Busty, you better hold onto that thing until my April visit (19-20ish). I must see this thing.

Does it even work properly? Or will I be drafted to "repair" it? Now I'm getting excited / curious.

So the old couple sent me pictures of this organ. It looks great but doesn't work she says. That's a pretty good drive for something that:

a) I don't know what's broken,

b) I don't know if I can get the parts to fix,

c) I don't know if I or Cap'N have the ability to fix.

It's a shame because there may be a chance that it wouldn't take much and after doing soem research it looks like these thing have the ability to go for a pretty penny.

Hmmmm. what do I do here?

[Nerdy Post Warning]

To add to this, does anybody here know off-hand whether these things are tube-driven? I seem to recall seeing a bit about there being a 12axu or some variant in the pre-stage, but then it doesn't power anything, so there'd be no power-stage tubes.

If that's correct, the #1 culprit is a $12 tube... that I have spares of lying around. Yes, ax7's are a little hotter than axu's, but they work for testing purposes.

However, this is old enough that it may be a much less popular old radio tube, kinda like an old "golden throat" radio I rescued back in athens... I had never seen that kind of tiny, skinny tube before, and wasn't able to locate a cheap replacement.

So yeah, any keyboard players know what's in that thing?

I don't think there's such a thing as a 12axu...perhaps you meant a 12au7?

From searching Hammond "model d" tubes

Looks like it takes either (a) 4 6V6, 1 6SN7 and 1 5U4, or (b) ? 2A3s, 2-56, 1-5Z3.

That was just 5 seconds of googling, I could probably come up with better if I spent more effort, but I'm not going to unless you guys get the organ.

Either way, I'm well versed in tube technology, so get the thing, and I'll help out with the tubes.

Get the Hammond, get the Hammond, get the Hammond.

Besides, if you can get a pretty penny for a working Hammond organ, you can probably get an ugly penny for a non-working Hammond organ. I'm sure there's a whole subculture oriented around fixing them and refurbishing them.

PS WTF, dude, it's Wednesday, how come this thing isn't gone already?

12axy + 12au7 + Accounting Midterm this afternoon = 12axu.

d'oh.

If it's "4 6V6, 1 6SN7 and 1 5U4" then that means these DO push power. Huh. I'll be jiggered. Them 4 6V6's will be making anywheres from 30 to 80-100ish watts, depending on how they're pushed, no? And the 6SN7 drives the preamp, leaving the good ol' 5U4 as the rectifier?

And if it's "2A3s, 2-56, 1-5Z3" then I'm fucking profoundly lost.

I believe that the issue is that we're going outta town this weekend, so that's out, and that leaves next weekend to go get it. Meanwhile, they're holding it for him. He's spoken with them on the phone I think. That part of WI is roughly 2 or 3 hours from us. Buster gets home at like 6, so that sorta rules out weeknights.

We'll get it.

Yeah, that's what I get, too.

Didn't do the math, but offhand, that sounds right.

Yup.

Yeah, I have no idea what a 56 is, either, but a 2A3 is another power tube, and a 5Z3 is another rectifier, so it's probably another preamp tube like the 6SN7.

Kewl. Just wanted to reinforce -- shouldn't be a decision.
