i recomend giving it another listen. the production has grown on me every year and now seems like it was way ahead of it's time.

it's still a bit of a mess, and i listen to disk two much more than disk one . . . but i love it.

I believe my old copy is scratched beyond listenability, but I'll have to grab it from my parents' house next time I go visit. At any rate, I don't think it holds a candle to their first one, and it was left off of the '93 poll.

This thread also reminds me of how awesome that Gorky's Zygotic Mynci album is. I always forget that I own it, but everytime I put it on, I like it more than I remembered. I seriously need to get more of their stuff.

it's a very different beast than the first. I love them both, but over the years have probably listened to Forever more than the first. I usually reach for the solo albums when i want to hear the early Wu sound.

We could discuss the fact that Wu-Tang and Blur could have been left off in favor of something like Belle & Sebastian and maybe the best Smog album (or even Mogwai), but it wouldn't make much difference either way.

If someone (jewels) actually votes for that Wu-Tang album, my mind will be blown.

I really don't care what SK puts as the ten as long as he provides the other option. Just for discussion though, I do think SK took the why no hip hop/rap thing repeatedly asked too much to heart which has resulted in some lesser albums making the poll. That's just a gut feeling though because I can't say I've even heard all the ones that I get that feeling about. And I'm talking about Missy as well as the wu tang as well as a few others from prior years.

I don't imagine many would vote for Smog or Mogwai though so I don't think either of those really belong. My heart says that he should have included Buena Vista Social Club because its the one world music album that really did cross over to the mainstream. But I can see why he didn't -- this is an indie rock board not a world music board.

Leaving off 36 Chambers and Ready to Die was an oversight - both clearly belonged in their respective years. Don't think that by including an album I'm making some kind of qualitative distinction. In the latter years especially, there are just 9 slots for about 80 equally matched candidates.

Yes, I did intentionally load this year up with rap. Buena Vista was considered, but I'm not all that familiar with it. I also considered Dylan and Yo La Tengo. Not a fan of B&S.

Yeah, I put a wink smiley on my post for a reason. I don't really think anyone would vote for that Smog album either, although you might be surprised with the Mogwai one. I don't really care what he puts on there either as long as he doesn't miss any *obvoius* choices. That's only happened maybe once or twice.

You might be right about the over-compensation with the hip-hop on this one, but I really couldn't judge either. I've only heard the Wu-Tang one.

I went with Built To Spill.

Probably followed by:
OK Computer
Pavement - Brighten The Corners

and I agree with Billy on Buena Vista Social Club; I'm not a big "world" music person, but I really enjoy that album quite a bit.

"Bridges To Babylon" is pretty hot in places as well.

"Thief In The Night" is a fucking awesome song.

I'm surprised you didn't put Portishead in the actual voting list. People will vote for that.

Ugh -- you liked that Space Needle album?!? Never could digest it...difficult listening at its peak...I bet you like Mahavishnu Orchestra, too...not that there's anything wrong with that...and I like me some difficult listening...

In other news: I don't know what my answer is yet, I have to think about it (always thought OK Computer was over-rated -- never "got" it).

Of those listed, I'd have to go with Notwist's 12.

Choosing Radiohead wasn't as easy as I figured it would be once I looked at the whole list, because Catherine Wheel's Adam and Eve is one of my favorite albums of all time, but it's just slightly edged out by OKC.

My notables:
Radiohead - OK Computer
Robert Wyatt - Shleep
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
Archer Prewitt - In The Sun
Super Furry Animals - Radiator
Catherine Wheel - Adam and Eve
Bob Dylan - Time Out Of Mind
Faith No More - Album Of The Year
Ween - The Mollusk
Guided By Voices - Mag Earwhig!
Medeski, Martin and Wood - Shack-Man
Tobin Sprout - Moonflower Plastic (Welcome To My Wigwam)

I voted for Elliott Smith. Not a very good year from the look of it. And I never got into Radiohead.

Of those not yet mentioned...

Indie approved pick:
NECKBONES - Souls On Fire

Non-Indie approved pick and the #1 all-time selling album by a female artist and #1 album of SoundScan era (1991-present):
SHANIA TWAIN - Come On Over

It's also the #7 all-time (#4 non-greatest hits/non-double). Incredibly, its producer was also responsible for #3 non greatest/double 'Back In Black'.

1997 was a good year.

Although who could argue with OKC.... if you asked which of these I would put on to listen... I would reach for Yo La Tengo and Son Volt with a lot more enthusiasm than Radiohead.

Radiohead

Kind of an obvious choice for me given I only really started listening to music in 1999 and for some reason haven't filled in many of the gaps fromm this year yet

next would be Bjork and Sleater-Kinney

And if we're counting this as 97, I'll also include it, though my copy says it was a 1996 release here in Aus

I voted Radiohead, but defintely at the time listened to BIG more, and now listen to If You're Feeling Sinister or Strangers Almanac a lot more.

I guess I picked up that Radiohead album in 1998 or so....

This is why I went with YLT. I've nothing but good things to say about the OKC but I'm far more apt to grab the former album which speaks something, right?
