Today I bought a new Lexmark all-in-one inkjet printer that has some great features on it I didn't have until now such as scanning and faxing. (yeah I know, I'm way behind the times here) After I connected the hardware and loaded the software from the CD-ROM I found that everything works fine except for the faxing feature. Right now when I try it I get an error message that says, "Cannot communicate with PC fax-modem, try these solutions":

- Connect your fax modem to your PC using a modem cable if not already connected.
- Install corresponding modem driver
- Power on modem
- Close other applications that may use your fax modem
- Update your modem software

The funny thing is that this new printer doesn't have an outlet for a telephone jack on it for some reason. The printer is connected to my computer by a USB cable. The PC is connected to the internet via a high speed cable modem which only has one open USB slot in the back right now. I'm using the same company for my cable TV and for the internet service. Of course I know beans about fax modems and drivers. This is for Win98SE OS. Anyone have an idea or know where to go for a quick tutorial about being able to fax from your computer? Any help regarding this would be much appreciated.

does it come with a driver installation cd or something

i guess its posssible that it uses the modem phone line but that seems kinda stupid to me

sure you didnt just miss the phone jack round the back of the printer or something?

The installation cd includes software for faxing but there is no telephone jack anywhere to be found on this printer (Lexmark X2350). I turned it over and over and couldn't find one. Also, there's no mention of it in the handbook so I'm thinking there must be another way to send faxes, maybe through the internet cable modem somehow instead of the phone line???

a couple of things first...
I always go to the mfr's web site and download the latest drivers. hardware is packaged with software that can be months or even a year older than what is currently available.

I looked on Lexmarks site and it appears that it is going to use tha modem on the PC to do the faxing, probably throught the USB connection. This would mean that you neeed to hook up your PC to the land line. Which should be easy IF you have a modem. if you don't then you need to:
a) get a modem. they should be cheap at this point if you can find them.
or
b) get an all-in-one that has it's own modem.

If I were you, I'd return it and get an all-in-one with a phone jack. I've owned a couple of all-in-one's (a Canon and my current HP) and they both had plenty of jacks and setup options for routing your phone lines and whatnot.

Plus, doesnt Lexmark kind of suck?
