Wattstax

while I was kicking it with the Senator this past weekend, we were discussing an article on the Chapelle Block Party film that referenced WattStax. We looked up and watched the trailer onlline. Looks fucking awesome. I actually said: "I bet BillyG's parents took him to that"

I think I'm gonna order this from Amazon this week. I'm a huge fan of both Richard Pryor and filthy jigaboo soul so I think I'll enjoy it.

Can anybody give me a review of "Festival Express"? I'm interested in seeing it as well.

As for one's I've seen, I really enjoy quite a few music docs including the much hated "Rattle and Hum"; "The Last Waltz", "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Live In New York", "Hail, Hail Rock'N'Roll", & "Bittersweet Motel" to name a few.

Flying Nun DVD

Yup, these. I played 'em through once on the computer, and then shelved them due to techno-tardation and paranoia about reseting my DVD drive's format. But they're excellent. The Hasselhoff Experiment "Drag Racer" clip is a marvel to behold.

And I thought I was the only one who liked it. It's probably my favourite U2 album as well, which is odd, I realize.

The only one I have is Wire - On The Box: 1979, a very interesting chronicle, that I like a lot.

The only other one I really want is that Cramps one, live at some mental hospital.

The Clash one listed elsewhere looks intriguing. Anyone know if there is vintage Jam DVD release? I really wish I had seen them in their heyday (circa 1980).

Is this worthwhile? My husband is a huge PF fan, and has this on VHS.

I would vote:

No way! You'll have to telll me how this is... :D

They're actually really making a big deal out of it and on the 27th at some bar on Halsted is a listening party, and then you can purchase it at midnight. For some reason I want to partake in this even if it is on a Monday night. I'll definitely fill you in on the contents, but if you're a fan of them, pick it up regardless.

I don't watch music DVDs much.

I have and like:
Can DVD
Lightning Bolt - Power of Salad
Wire - On the Box 1979
and, uh, Spinal Tap

don't have, but like:
Michel Gondry Director's Series
Wilco doc
Ramones - End of the Century

have, don't really like:
Pavement - Slow Century (made me like them less for a while)
Super Furry Animal - Rings Around the World (very weak visuals, for the most part)

Mine too, by a far site.

And, along with Wattstax and Festival Express, I really wanna peep that Monterrey Pop DVD.

Last Waltz is the best one I have seen, and really the only one viewed with anything approaching regularity

interstella 5555.

it's a leiji matsumoto film with daft punk's discovery as the score. and by that, i mean that there is no dialogue. there are some sound effects, but no words. it's pretty great.

I have a feeling that Chappelle's Block Party will make this list the second I see it.

Wattstax

I saw a copy of a copy of a copy of a..... that Garth Trinidad (KCRW) borrowed from his brother. And then tried for years to find myself a copy. Or at least just see it again which I was lucky enough to when the Arclight had it on thier Summer Music Doc series a few years back. I practically threw a party when it came out on DVD I was so happy.

I also have & like:

Moog
Can DVD

I have problems getting into ones that are straight videos that I have like Sonic Youth, Tricky, Spike Jonze & Massive Attack. All good but not great. And was a bit dissapointed with Made In Sheffield. And I have the VH1 History of Rock n Roll but I really want the PBS one (more Bowie). I also would love a copy of Pump Up The Volume the Channel4 UK doc on House music. I have a crappy .ram of it & love it. Maestro the House music doc was good, not great. Same with Better Living Thru Chemistry & Modulations. Maestro was more on the clubs themselves than the music. I think I'll watch the second disc today now that I think about it.

I cant believe I'm the only person who brought up Hail Hail Rock N Roll. That shit (especially the interplay between Chuck and Keith) is really entertaining.

YES! Incredible show. Watching the whole thing is like a marathon. It's exhausting. Even if it's a "with guests" type of thing, which usually annoys me, it's incredible (because the "guests" are relevant to the band in most cases, or don't really change anything if they aren't.)

Allow me to actually contribute:

Image
King Crimson - Eyes Wide Open. Really well done - two shows, one from 2000, one from 2003. The 2000 show is interesting because it inserts a semi-random improv segment each time you watch it, to make it a little more like seeing the band live. I still prefer the 2003 disc, however, if only for the fact that Pat M's playing live drums along with his electronic ones, whereas the 2000 show is all electronic and it just doesn't work as well live.

Image
It's rumored that this show has massive amounts of touch-ups to the audio, and I don't doubt it given PG's comment in the liner notes about it being a "concept" of a live experience, but the end result is still an incredible show.

I don't have a lot of music DVDs yet, but my most entertaining is Dig.

On VHS, I have a few that I really love and hope to get on DVD some day and that is X's The Unheard Music and Kate Bush's The Whole Story.
