Why by genre? Why not abc-etically?

By Genre then Alphabetically within genre. Alphabetically works fine when you know which disc you're looking for but its harder if you just are thinking I want to listen to some funk and then have to go through your whole collection. I also notice that I get lazy often in trying to decide what to listen to -- I usually start at "A" and move across the racks until I find something that seems like it will serve my mood. As a result, I listen to A-M cds A LOT more than N-Z. I'd like to change that.

Why not do it alphabetically and just make a big spreadsheet of all your albums and include genre, so if you feel like listening to punk, just look at that part of your spreadsheet?

I don't listen to enough genres outside "rock" to organize by genre. I like the idea of your new storage units, but I think if I had that I'd have a hard time because I like to stare at my cds until I know what I "feel" like listening to. Of course, I could do the spreadsheet thing too. Actually, I might do what you are doing with my dvds at some point. Not yet though. Do you think they will get scratched at all? Do the liner notes go in the sleeve too?

I don't know how I'd break rock down into effective subgenres, though.

I had the bright idea to use Allmusic's sub genre catagory for each album but then a lot of the albums I have aren't on Allmusic and most of them I disagreed with their opinion so vehemently I'd have to decide myself.

At the very least it makes sense to sort out classical, jazz, country, and world. If there's a crossover, I tend to build up the weer set.

Now that you say that, I think I was doing the exact same thing and not even realizing it.
