So, there's this back road near my house without a posted speed limit sign. This, where I am from, means that the speed is 55 mph. However, there's this spot where you cross some railroad tracks and for the next 1/2 of a mile there are some homes and what not. The speed drops briefly to 25 mph. At about 8 pm last night I am driving on that road and I never think about that drop in speed limit because the road is hardly travelled and, well, I just never think about it so I fly through there. Well, last night there was a cop hiding in a cemetary. He clocked me at 52 right over the railroad tracks. I knew as soon as I saw the tailights go on when I crossed the tracks that I was done for.
In Virginia 18 mph over the posted speed limit is reckless driving. In case you're too lazy to do the math, I was going 27 mph over the posted speed limit. Plus, it was "residential". So, on top of the reckless driving fine of god knows how much, I would have gotten a residential fine of 200 bucks, plus $7/mph over the speed limit. But the cop said, "Seein' as how you were cooperative and had your hands on the steering wheel when I came up to the car, I am just gonna give you a straight speeding ticket". not reckless, no residential fine.
All in all, this ticket is gonna rip me a new one because it is still 5 bucks for ever mph over the speed limit which makes it $160 for that, plus court costs and I am currently unemployed. However, it's better than 3 points on my driving record and a crapload of fines.
I thought that was gracious of the cop considering I am not a woman and crying to get out of the ticket is just not an option.
