I just saw that I had 2 PMs, but rather than chance responding there, I'd better do it here.

What I want to do is get an overhead projector, and project photographs I've taken onto paper (even that media could change) and copy them onto the paper. I just need help figuring out what kind of media- colored pencils, paint, or what? Or is that just a trial & error kind of thing?

What kind of paper should I use, do you think? Of course, I don't want to use really thin paper (I may try to sell them later, hopefully, and will want to use something that will last, but isn't too expensive).

Are there any boards like Obner out there to throw out ideas and get advice that you know of?

I used to do this back in high school. I'd take pics I liked from magazines, project them on the wall & make posters out of them. Back then, I just used marking pens, but now, I want to be able to do more shading.

well, if you go to an art store (NOT ben franklin or anything of that sort) you can find some nice papers of different weights. The thinner weights are in the 100 lbs. The thicker and rougher textured papers tend to be in the upper 100-200 lbs or more. The thicker and more textured it is, the more it can withstand. I use this paper for drawing and it's great for water based media.
It feels really nice, too.
I don't know.. if you're doing watercolor or gouache that's the stuff to use. If you're doing acrylics a canvas or wood panel is suitable. Actually, really any surface is suitable, but that's the most traditional I suppose.
Oils, same applies.

If you're doing paper, go the nice paper route. It's about three-four dollars a sheet of nice paper, which is worth it. It looks professional with the way its ripped and it's durable. Buy thicker and more textured if you are going to use watercolors or gouache though... just personal opinion. If you get thick paper that is not textured it's highly unlikely that the paper will soak up your paint, which will result in your paper flaking off and tearing holes where it is wet. It has happened to me before.
Numerous times. If you're doing a rigorous drawing, not something light but something really heavy where you will apply thick heavy lines then go for thicker paper. Drawing probably wouldn't require textured paper, though.
Mmmmmm.. thinking about this paper makes me feel warm. I love touching it.

i have a big roll of aquabee 140 lb paper. i think it's 140 lb. i threw away the bag it came in... but it works well. i did a drawing on it and painted on it. it was about 20 or 30 dollars for the roll but it comes with a lot of paper.

A visual of what I was talking about! The texture is a result of how the paper was made. ie: hot press, cold press.



and I bought aquabee because it's well trusted but Arches is supposed to be really good.
