This is partly due to soccer being at a low ebb for the last few years despite what all the hype will tell you. The fact that Greece are current European Champions and Liverpool and Porto were the last two Champions League winners tells you everything you need to know. There are no great teams out there (Except perhaps the current Brazil team).

What do you think of the possibility of a team like Barcelona winning the CL this year?

It's difficult to tell if this world cup will see a new crop of world class players emerge or if it will be a relative flop like the 2002 World Cup, where poor to average teams were able to progress through the competition to the latter stages.

Yeah, this is why I find it ridiculous that people actually think England can win this year, or anyone other than Brazil for that matter.

Though on a selfish note, is does bode well for Australia's chances of progressing if a lot of the former powerhouses are a bit average this time around. And in a way it makes it more interesting if the results aren't so predictable. But you're right, it is time for some younger players to step up, at least so that Ronaldinho has some competition for golden boot.

I think Barca doesn't really have much of an excuse. I fully expect them to win and have been rooting for them hard from the beginning.

Has France really done anything since they won the Euro title in 2000? They don't even have Zidane anymore.

i'd like to address this more in depth, although darrin did a good job. but for now it is important to point out that the french do indeed have zidane. he has come out of international retirement to play for les bleus one last time in the world cup

they still have Viera, Trezeguet, Henry...

yeah will be interesting. Shocked that they have done a u-turn with Zidane. Great player but with madrid he has been so poor this season. They have some potentially great players in reserve.
