Some people get lucky and stumble onto something great (or massively successful, so not to make a qualitative judgement) and some don't. They've got to grind it out the hard way. I've been doing the latter for the last decade and I wouldn't begrudge anyone their good fortune if it happened to come quickly. That's not childish, it's maturity.

Except that Morrissey doesn't seem to be "begrudging anyone their good fortune." He's saying that sudden success must be ungratifying and might feed insecurity. To take his words - as they've been quoted here - and dismiss them as sour grapes isn't maturity, it's childishness.

Dude, the work ethic/GPA/standardized test thread is over there.

Note that I'm not touting I'm a fucking genius, just acknowledging that I haven't had anything handed to me nor am I exactly young, as per Rad's (a) and (b) choice.

If you exclude his qualifying afterthoughts, of insecurity and gratification, he sounds like someone who is, in fact, begrudging of the Arctic Monkeys' success by saying "It's happening all too quickly for them. They haven't proved a thing and they haven't had to work very hard - They haven't been driving up and down the M1 for fifteen years." This sounds to me a bit like a grumpy old man who sounds slightly resentful of the ease in which their sucess has been achieved. My feeling is 'good for them', so they haven't had to slog away for years on tour, they have a huge slide to mediocrity ahead of them to enjoy.

That's exactly it. Morrissey isn't begrudging them anything, he's offering them a warning like the kindly, experienced elder he is. And, of course, by kindly, experienced elder I mean fag.
