i heard a tune in some store recently...lyrics were:

if i were a carpenter, and you were my lady

i googled the lyrics, and it wasn't cash or any of the people i saw listed...it was a live version and sounded somewhat nick drakeish...just vocals and acoustic.

any ideas?

Shoot, that's been recorded by dozens and dozens of people.

Tim Hardin's version maybe? Or Luka Bloom's?

It's the dude who died. But I don't think Tim Hardin

"If I Were A Carpenter" was originally written by Tim Hardin but it's super-famous and been covered many times, so I have no idea what version you heard.

The song title is "If I Were A Carpenter"

Tim Hardin's is the original but its been covered by lots including Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Small Faces, and the Four Tops.

I'd guess you might have heard Tim Hardin's based on the nick drake comparison but who knows..

That's because Joan Baez has about the world's most irritating voice.
Or maybe you don't like Leon Russell or Bobby Darrin or Waylon's version of it.
Or Peter Seeger or the others I can't think of right now.

He's a very good songwriter. I have lots of songs he wrote performed by others. I'm not sure if I've heard he play before though. I recently ordered a comp which includes all his recordings on the Verve label which were supposed to be his best period. It hasn't arrived yet though so I can't personally weigh in yet.

He is a highly regarded 60's folk singer/songwriter though so that's why I think its likely him you heard.

Not sure which version you heard.

The only version I've ever heard was when my bf sings it & plays guitar. Sounds nice when he plays it. Guess he probably knows it through Mr. Cash, as he is a big fan.

tim harden 2 is the one that has "If I Were A Carpenter" on it. But I'm guessing that its probably worth bypassing buying that and just buying the "Hold On To Your Dreams" Anthology which contains that album in its entirity along with Tim Harden 1 and other stuff he he recorded for verve at the same time. That's what I did. I think its generally available for $20 or less.
