Because they deserve their own thread and not just to be a mention in the Eno thread.

Best American band of the last 20 years?
I could make the case for it.

Plus, have any of you seen them live?
Astonishing.

np: Kiko

I think I played How Will The Wolf Survive at least a hundred times the year it came out.

One of the first albums I bought where my friends went, "Huh?" I still remember reading a review which described it as "both hot and cool, like jalapeno ice cream"

Great great great.

What kills me is how their drummer has now relegated drum duties and is now on the front line as a hot-shit guitar player. Don't see that too often.

Love them.

Not only the best American band in the last 20 years, I think a case can be made for them being the best American band ever. I've seen them live at least 10 times. Depending on their mood, the year, they are raw garage R&B rock, or delicate Latin-Mexican folk artists, or progressive alternative art-rockers, or heavy middle American grungers.

David Hidalgo's voice is an American treasure.

No band does "covers" with as much authenticity. Put on "Across 110th St." from last year's CD, turn it up loud, and if your heart doesn't soar, your pulse race, you don't "get" what music can be.

Harry,
You are so right. I didn't want to be accused of hyperbole. But I, for one, am with you on ALL COUNTS.

I've only gotten into them recently with the purchases of used albums. I can agree with the above comments about them being a great band, and being overshadowed.

Kiko has become one of my faves no doubt.

I literally just listened to it yesterday. "A Matter of Time" is one of the prettiest songs ever.

A great band to be sure.

Phish used to a really nice cover of "When The Circus Comes"

What can you say, except that I hope I'm that cool in my late 50's... but I'm sure I won't be.

"Hey, Grandpa, can you play with me?"
"Sorry, chulo, I've gotta go jam at the Fillmore."

Sidenote, did they ever find David's wife's body?

See them at the Watsonville High School's auditorium where they play regularly because of "familia" in Watsonville. Grandpa, tia, nietos, primos, all family of all ages totally jamming with life and passion. Nothing like it.
