You're supposed to bring a gift?

Really?

I don't understand this one bit. You celebrate the fact you're getting married? As if the wedding isn't enough of a party? Just the fact you decided to get married warrants a party with gifts. And the groom doesn't even have a real job. I'm gonna end up contributing more out of my pocket to this relationship in the next year than he will.

Regift. I saved a bunch of my useless wedding gifts for that exact reason.

Hmmm...I know that at bridal showers, you take a gift. But, engagement parties? I thought you just go to drink and give congrats.

I've been told that in the Mexican tradition, if you're single, you're not required to take a gift. Damen, I hearby grant you Mexican diplomatic immunity. ;)

it is ridiculous. we made sure to put "please, no gifts" on the invites to our engagement party.
we still got some though.

That's what I thought, too, but a friend of mine had one and got loads of gifts. Nothing like wedding gifts, but a lot of restaurant gift certificates, Crate and Barrel stuff and picture frames. Why does everyone give picture frames?

I've never heard of bringing gifts to an engagement party. Does it specify that on the invitation? If so, you're friends with some greedy bastards! ;)

i had no idea people brought gifts to these until we had ours. even still, I was surprised that anyone did, but didn't care if they did or didn't. I wouldn't feel obligated.

they should specify on the invite though. nothing like being left in limbo and then feeling like crap because a bunch of other people brought something and you didn't.
the whole engagement/shower/wedding gift thing is f'ed. and then you gotta do it all over again for the baby.

But then only for the first baby... I get so irritated when I get invited to showers for second and third babies. Didn't they get all their baby crap at the first one???

It's pretty common to bring gifts to the engagement party here but if you give a decent give you usually give something very small for the actual wedding or nothing at all.

Absolutely but it's pretty cool getting tons of shit you only kind of need. Awesome when you recieve. Absolute bullshit when you give.
