Thrillhouse, i remember that site. I think I made some appreciative and yet crude comments about your girlfriend, not realizing that she was your girlfriend. She's still the cutest out of that whole bunch.

I could be totally mistaken...

Hee, I think this only works if you're *good.* I had a friend who painted her own canvases, mostly boring pictures of flowers, and she had them all over her house. It makes sense, in that she was already kind of full of herself, so she just assumed anything she pulled out of her ass would be gold. ;)

I have several framed photographs in my house of trips we've taken.

The "expensive" stuff, well, I guess it depends on the artist. There's a Coast Salish artist named Susan Point out of Vancouver whom I love, and I'd pretty much pay just about anything for her stuff if it gets an emotional response out of me. I also have a friend that specializes in arts and crafts/period artwork. He did a painting for us and gave us a deal on it, with the stipulation that he could reproduce that painting for others if they requested it. I didn't care because I had the original anyway. I have another friend who's an artist, and I currently do not have any of his stuff, but I hope to fix this soon. He has told me that he wouldn't charge me anything for it because I'm a friend, but I told him that was unacceptable-- if it's his craft, I will pay for it.

btw, I love everyone's websites with their pieces... you are all very talented!

These are awesome. I have a few framed prints around the house but most of our "art" are photos I have taken of friends, family and landscapes. I got a lot of great shots last year in Cali and have taken tons more this time. 32 hours of driving gives you much time to take pictures.

I usually don't spend that much on art but that is a beautiful piece and it seems to really connect with you, which is the whole point of art. Go for it.

The real way to determine the value of art is to slice it in half with an exacto knife and see if anyone:

1. gives a shit
2. tells you how much it is ACTUALLY worth.

Fair market value in the art world is really what people are willing to pay...as you mentioned the framing costs a certain amount so factor that in...it is hard to say without seeing the image and knowing whether it is a signed print and who the artist is (regional artists sell better in their region, etc.).

Some of the Obner artwork I've seen has been really good (i.e. fishstick and cemetery polka)...I have a small, growing art collection of my own (mostly outsider folk art because that is what I can afford)...mmmmaybe we can have an art sale one day?!? Also, anyone with good art that wants to be featured on my web log, don't hesitate to contact me with images and an artists statement (as long as you are sincere...if not sincere, just back it up with something decent, heh). Mmmmaybe one day I'll put some of my stuff on there...I'm too guarded..maybe could trade some art? I dunno...I'm just typing and thinking out loud and wishing I wasn't poor despite working 2 jobs and 6 days a week.

Good call, wilked. Something jazzy done in the style of the first pic would be great.

A lot of posts mention the costs of getting the piece framed, but if the work hasn't been started yet, you may want to consider having the painting done on a canvas that's "gallery" or "museum" wrapped. There are no visible staples on the edge of the canvas, and the piece can be hung unframed, but still have a finished look. You can save a lot of money this way.
