Have you heard of Alexi Murdoch? My sister has been singing his praises for close to a year now, and I'm just now getting around to listening to some of his stuff. When I was reading through the thread about songs that make you cry, I saw you had listed Jeff Buckley, Joseph Arthur, and other similar artists. This guy might be up your alley (not in the "make you cry" kind of way, but in the musical way!).

I've always been fond of his song "Orange Sky." I think I heard it recently on a tv show.

Is that that soccer playing dude, or is that Nicolai Dunger? I haven't checked out either, and the names always confuse me.

aural fixation and stevec were singing his praises a while back on the ole cmj board. that got me to purchasing his 4 songs ep. it is really good singer/songwriter stuff. also similar and worth checking out, as well as also originally touted by tania, is patrick park.

i have been wondering if we will ever see a full length from alexi murdoch though.

oh, and nicolai is the ex-soccer player.

Yeah, I figured he'd been mentioned before. I'll have to check out Patrick Park. As for full-lengths, dunno, but he did tour the southern states recently (like within the last two months). My sister spent quite a bit of time with him and his girlfriend, and it sounded like he was working on new stuff.

It's been on The OC and Garden State.

Ah, Garden State... that's where I heard it, because I've never watched the OC.

I think epa's talking about douchebag Alexi Lalas, not Nicholai. Right, the fire-crotch.

My sis-in-law & half of Austin, TX were practically bonkers for the little feller the last couple years. Either he called Austin 'home' or just really liked playing the 4th St. circuit - he doesn't discriminate even the shittiest of venues. Nonsense aside, the only thing I really know about the guy is that he has a small army of women that attend his every show. Similar to your D. Rices and B. Schneiders and J. Mayers, I think. At least, I've always lumped theses artist into the same hunky & folksy singer-songwriter category that usually does my head in. Never heard him and just not ready to start.

While we're on the folk tip, who's got the scoop on Laura Cantrell? Apparently, she made quite the impression on J. Peel before he passed. And recently signed to Matador.

Thanks,

Pikey

Dana, I love you! (hi and how are you, by the way). This just answered the 'who is that' question to recently float into my head.

I did indeed praise the lovely Alexi Murdoch over a year ago (could be almost two). And to make you ladies even more jealous...at my very first Damien Rice show, both Alexi and Patrick Park opened for him. Yup, I was in seventh heaven that night.

Alexi is quite the talented guy. I highly encourage you to seek out his work.

I have both Laura Cantrell albums and they are both very good. John Peel used to say her first album 'Not The Tremblin' Kind' was his favourite album from the last ten years. I wouldn't quite go that far, but you could do a lot worse than pick it up. She's more old-timey Country & Western than folk though, so you better like steel guitars and mandolin.
