I was watching this musical called "Half A Sixpence" from the 60s on TV the other night. I must've watched a good 20 minutes of it , all the while convinced that the lead was Steve Lawrence. I was slightly confused by this - because the guy was really kicking ass as a performer in this movie. I mean, he was
on fire. And doing a flawless cockney accent to boot. I had never heard nor seen any evidence that Lawrence was anything more than a coattail rider of guys like Sinatra, etc (Perhaps this is an unfair characterization perpetuated by comics and shows like SNL, but it has been my impression nonetheless), so I was wondering why, if the guy had talent like this, he wasn't known for this work instead of being a secondary rat pack posse member.
Long story short, I looked up "Half A Sixpence" online and discovered that the lead was NOT Steve Lawrence, but a british fellow named Tommy Steele.
You can see why I made the mistake.
