No they aren't from africa, but the music they play is afrobeat. To the extent there was any issue with the album its' that desco billed it as an african album and even gave some of the guys african names to try to create an authentic image. The music is the same though and personally I like it much more than any antibalas album even though its a subset of the same guys.

Lafayette Afro Rock Band aren't african either for that matter. They used to play funk under the name "Ice" I have no probs with calling it afrobeat though because musically that's what it is. There's unfortunately not a whole lot of afrobeat from africa readily available outside of the big names and a few comps. The day someone reissues a complete Brigth Engelberts album I'm going to have a bit of a mess to clean up.

And senator I wasn't fishing for a review...was just curious if you liked it. Never heard you mention listening to it before.

yeah, i definitely don't have any problem calling what they play afrobeat. i was just under the impression it was from the late 60's early 70's. it definitely has a much more "vintage" sound to it than antibalas. while i do love antibalas, i think i prefer the daktaris also.


i keep meaning to check these guys out too. you sent me a copy of the same afrobeat mix you sent the senator...and i remember digging them...thanks for the reminder.

i went to highschool with one of the founders of antibalas.
he changed his name and now he speaks with a mexican accent for some reason.

nice guy, but the mexican accent kind of weirds me out.
awesome about their success though, and they put on a hell of a show.
