Interesting...

Quote:
LONDON — "Definitely Maybe," the debut album by Oasis, has beaten the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in a British vote for the greatest album of all time, organizers said Thursday.

The Beatles also took third place with "Revolver" and had three other albums in the Top 100 in the vote staged by British Hit Singles & Albums, an annual publication, and NME.com.

The vote was announced in last year's edition of British Hit Singles & Albums, said editor David Roberts. Anyone could vote for as many as 10 albums, in rank order, and probably 95 percent of the 40,000 votes came from Britain, he said.

The biggest surprise, in Roberts' view, was The Libertines' debut album, "Up the Bracket," at No. 15 — a strong showing he attributed to singer Pete Doherty's well-publicized involvement with supermodel Kate Moss and his arrests for alleged drug use.

Other albums on the list include U2's "The Joshua Tree" (No. 11), Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (No. 35), the Rolling Stones' "Exile on Main Street," (No. 42), The White Stripes' "Elephant" (No. 59), Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" (No. 84) and the Eagles' "Hotel California" (No. 100).

The top 10:

1. "Definitely Maybe," Oasis.

2. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," The Beatles.

3. "Revolver," The Beatles.

4. "OK Computer," Radiohead.

5. "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" Oasis.

6. "Nevermind," Nirvana.

7. "The Stone Roses," The Stone Roses.

8. "Dark Side of the Moon," Pink Floyd.

9. "The Queen Is Dead," The Smiths.

10. "The Bends," Radiohead.

Holy crap, there's a blog attached to this article where AJC (Atlanta Urinal-Constipation) readers give their picks. The people who post in these blogs have become one of my favorite guilty pleasures.

I figured somebody had already posted this one. I'm just fascinated by this accompanying blog. Note that somebody has Nevermind - Pearl Jam as one of their selections:

Best album of all time?

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A poll of 40,000 mostly British voters puts “Definitely Maybe,” the debut album by Oasis, as the greatest album of all time, beating the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (No. 2) and “Revolver,” which placed third.

Other albums on the list include U2’s “The Joshua Tree” (No. 11), Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (No. 35), the Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main Street,” (No. 42), The White Stripes’ “Elephant” (No. 59), Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” (No. 84) and the Eagles’ “Hotel California” (last at No. 100).

It’s your turn. Which five to 10 albums would be on your “greatest” list? Brief supporting arguments accepted.

(No fair if you have to flip through your 8-track collection to jog your memory.)

I would actually hope it's placed that high because it's such a brilliant album, but it probably is because of his dead man walking routine.

He just got arrested again yesterday, shooting up in the toilets of an easy jet flight to Barcelona!

Man, I like reading lists like this, they're a bit more interesting than your standard critic's list. On these, Meat Loaf, ELO and Drivin' and Cryin' come in at number 1.

Exactly. Just what normal people (not music obsessed freaks like us) think though they will defend just as vehemently their pick of Drivin N Cryin as you would the Stones or whatever.

A dude I listen to who does sports radio always says that if you wanna get the phones ringing on a slow sports day, start talking about music. People get more passionate about it than they do over football.
