I'm totally wrapped up in it.

Anyone else watching?

I can't believe they expected that little girl to spell Weltschmerz.

As fucked up as it sounds, I'm glad the girl from our contest didn't make it to the televised rounds. Not so much the girl, but her mother.

It was quite intense.
And my kids were all wrapped up in it, too.
Just insane how good those kids were.

The mother started off by saying, "I'm not one of those over involved parents…",

Then, she pressed and pressed and pressed because:
(A) Local winners are invited to some cookout type shindig + One Chaperone, usually a parent. Well, MOM wanted to bring half of her class, about 12-15 students as well, and she was pissed we couldn't score extra tickets.

(B) She wanted a bigger suite, preferably a King Suite.

(C) Not only did she want a larger hotel room, but she also wanted us to pick up her gasoline tab back and forth from DC every day (about 30 miles). That's right, she wanted a bigger room, and she didn't even want to stay in it every night.

That was the last set of demands I heard. She would call repeatedly throughout the week, and if her contact person wasn't there, she would pester whoever answered the phone for her cell & home numbers, or even better, her (and my) boss' cell & home numbers.

What a maroon.

I can't believe they expected that little girl to spell Weltschmerz.

My favorite word of the night was defined as "the bright light around the shadow of someone's head on the ground that comes from the light refracted by dew in the grass."

Anyone remember the exact word? I know it ended with "...schein".

I threw a spelling bee once in the fourth grade because I didn't want to go to the next round in some district thing.

There's a great recent docu called "Spellbound" that follows eight kids as they go to the spelling bee championship. The intensity of some of the kids and their parents is kinda frightening at times. Pick it up if you see it.

I remember that word.
Great word.
Wish I could remember what the hell it was.

Did you ask her if she could spell "go fuck yourself"?

i think i was in 4th grade when i got confused with "gesture" and "jester." i couldn't understand the speaker and i didn't know that you could ask for it to be used in a sentence or a definition, so i started spelling one of them and it was the wrong one.

also, spellbound is amazing. when i saw it, the whole theater applauded when the robot kid was ousted.
